Executive Summary

Background and Survey Objective

This is an UNOFFICIAL brief survey aimed at collecting data from anonymous participants stating their
views on whether IBA should start other Degree Programs related to STEM or it should stick to its
core competence and remain a dedicated Business School. Many well reputed Institutes/Universities
in Pakistan have been continuously expanding and diversifying their degree programs e.g. Lahore
University of Management Sciences (LUMS) has been offering many STEM programs since 2008 when
it established the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering. This survey will supposedly to to
answer if IBA should follow the suit.

Participants
A total of 53 respondents belonging to relatively diverse demographic groups have taken part in this
survey.

Methodology
This survey was designed with two types of questions; majority of them are Multiple Choice
(Yes/No/Maybe) questions while others include a five point scale. The platform used to collect this
data was Google Forms.

Data Collected
A mixture of both Quantitative and Qualitative data was collected from the respondents during the
survey.

Questions and the Responses:
Question One
Age

The majority of participants belonged to the age group of 15-20. Similarly, 96% of the total
respondents were aged below 25. Moreover, only 3.8% of the total participants were aged 25 or
above.

Question Two
Gender

The pool of participants was relatively even Gender-wise. It was constituted of 54.7% male and 45.3%
female respondents.

Question Three
Educational Background

Around 68% of the participants belonged to Intermediate background and about 28% of them had
done A-Levels. While a tiny 4% of the respondents were still in High School.

Question Four
Highest Level of Education Completed

Of all the respondents, about 61% had either completed their High School or were still in. Moreover,
40% had at least completed their undergraduate studies.

Question Five
Have/Had you taken Science Subjects during your A-levels/Intermediate?

A majority of 83% either had taken or are studying Science Subjects in their Intermediate or A-Levels.
Consequently, only 17% of the total participants had not taken any science subjects.

Question Six
If Yes, Did/Do you wish to continue with an Undergraduate degree in Science?

When asked whether they ever did or will (as this includes those students who are still in High School)
consider pursuing an Undergraduate degree in Science, 43.4% were affirmative and 35.8% were not
in favor. While 20.8% remained indecisive.

Question Seven
Do you agree that IBA should introduce Science Programs at Undergraduate/Graduate
Levels?

A hefty 60.4% of the respondents were very much in favor of IBA expanding the programs it offers to
include STEM programs. While only a mere 20% seemed to be against it.

Question Eight
Would you be interested to join IBA if an Undergraduate Science Program is initiated?

About 36% of the participants were willing to join IBA if an Undergraduate Science program was
initiated and 30% were not sure. While 34% were not interested in joining.

Question Nine
Which Undergraduate degree program would you be most interested in?

And when asked, which program they would be most inclined towards, about 68% chose either
Electrical/Chemical Engineering or Physics. Around 20% showed an interest in Biology while 13.2%
preferred Chemistry.

Question Ten
If you are a Current IBA student with a Science Background, would you have preferred
to study a Natural Sciences/STEM Program (If it were offered) over your current field
of study?

Of the Current IBA students with a Science Background, 34% would have chosen a Science program
over their current field of study, if it were offered.

Conclusion
A majority of the respondents was under the age of 25 and had either just completed their
High School or were still in. In addition, they were very much in favor of IBA starting other Degree
Programs related to Science in general and Physics & Engineering in particular.
Since, IBA managed to make its CS program a success, it is very likely that more Science-
related Degree Programs will meet a similar fate. Moreover, the survey shows that 60.4% of the
respondents are highly in favor of IBA diversifying its degree program and 34% are likely to enroll
themselves for science programs. Hence, we are 34% confident that the respondents will opt for
science program, if IBA offers it.
