"Always design a thing by considering its next larger context-a chair in a room, a room in a house,
a house in an environment and an environment in a city plan"
-Eliel Saarinen

An ideal public space in a city, should have a dynamic character which changes, with people to
people and time to time. It should also be flexible and porous, to adopt both the neighbourhood and
the visitors.

For e.g., Concentric square plan of Srirangam temple complex has a multi-layered character which
changes from the outer edge to its core. Though the core of Srirangam temple complex retains its
character, the outer edges of the temple complex blends, adopts and continue to survive with the
dynamic changes of the people and the city itself.

In most cities there are buildings of character which lose their effectiveness because they are
situated in out of the way locations. There are also prominent sites occupied by uninteresting
buildings which makes no contribution to the surrounding area. In urban design there should be
skillful deployment of architectural energy so that the influence of fine building radiates outward
articulating the whole fabric of the city.

"You cannot simply put something new in a place. You have to absorb what you see around you,
what exists on the land and then use that knowledge along with contemporary thinking to interpret
what you see."
-Tadao Ando
WHAT MAKES "TRICHY"-TRICHY?
Trichy is the geographic centre and CBD of Tamilnadu which pulls people from neighbouring
districts. Trichy, being a culturally strong city, also functions as an educational hub. It is evident
from the activities happening in the city throughout the year, which are a great success among the
people of Trichy. On the other hand, the so called "Modern Branded amenities/infrastructure" are
not receiving much attention from the people. This in turn, shows the people's affinity towards the
cultural and traditional heritage. A real city is a place where people imbibe, relate and grow
themselves with the surrounding for their betterment.

WHY THIS THEME?

Gandhi market acts as a major node and a landmark when people move around the city. It is one of
the major economic hub in Trichy. This site has a "metamorphic character" which acts, sustains and
protects the people in and around the city. The adjoining roads of the site connect the neighboring
cities like Tanjore, Madurai, Coimbatore and many more. This site is one of the best example for
coexistence of people and place.

With the existence of market, numerous exchanges happening between street vendors, hawkers,
floating people and busy traffic routes together makes it less interactive and predominantly not used
by the immediate users. In such a context, streets act as buffer zones as well as transition space
between the site and local inhabitants. The site not only has the potential to bring in people from
various places but it is also potential enough to connectt the immediate context and users.
"INSUBSTANTIAL PLACES"

For e.g., By dissolving the walls of enclosure with either screen, mirror, or illusion,
an intangible space is created which seems to have the property of receding as one
advances and closing up behind.

The sense of space is not particularized by the enclosing walls but exists throughout
like a scent hovers in a particular place. This is the most acute expression of that
emotive force.

Inference

Concluding from the above articles we found that over the past decade, a number of new initiatives
by organizations like TTF-Trichy Travel Federation, 720 ͦ entertainment have been emerging, but are
lacking a proper infrastructure and a way to reach more among the people.

With these startup and new innovative ideas on one side, the arts and crafts from various parts of
Trichy were exported to several parts of Tamilnadu and Kerela. In the past 15 years, the turnover by
these products has been drastically fallen by around 90%

The legacy of craftsmen and artisans who are scattered in and around the city has endured a huge
decline in their respective occupations which in turn forced them to change their occupations to
support their basic needs. This is mainly due to the lack of a platform to reach out to more people.

DESIGN STRATERGIES

“The difference in meaning between bigness and towering is the measure of the
relationship”.
To create a visual relationship with the towering architectural elements surrounding
the site.
