I. Introduction:

Abstract:

The purpose of this experiment was to show how the way we breakdown food relate to digestion, using
two candies on each beakers with 100 ml of water. We crushed a candy and put it on a beaker with 100
ml of water which is labelled as “A” while the other candy was left on its original form and still same it was
dropped on a beaker with 100 ml of water which was labelled as “B”. We observed how the two candies
slowly gets break downed with water and we saw that the crushed candy was easily dissolved by water
than the solid form candy. Thus we came to a realization that we should chew our food properly in order
for our digestive system to properly break down food. Our results shows the real importance of our ways
that will relate to the digestive system.

Objective/s:

1. Describe the process of mechanical digestion ; and

2. Explain how the physical breaking down of food help its digestion.

II. Apparatus:

1. Two 100ml beakers

2. Mortar and pestle

III. Materials:

 Warm water
 Two pieces of candies
 Paper towel

IV. Procedure:

a) Fill the two beakers with warm water. Make sure that the amount of water placed in each glass is
about the same. Label the glasses A and B
b) Prepare two pieces of candies. Wrap a piece of candy in a paper towel and crush it using a
mortar and pestle or any hard object like a piece of wood.
c) Place one piece of candy into the glass of warm water labeled A, and place the crushed pieces of
candy in the remaining glass of warm water labelled B.
d) Observe how long it takes for the whole candy in glass A and the crushed pieces of candy in
glass B to dissolve.
e) Draw your observation
V. Data/Result:

1. How does crushing the candy to smaller pieces affect its dissolution?
So that it is easier to dissolve. Since the smaller the candy piece the easier for the candy to
dissolve.
2. What does crushing the candy represent in the process of digestion?
The candy represents food that depends on how it is break downed or chewed in the
mouth in order for it to be digested easily and properly

A B

VI. Analysis/Discussion:

Upon doing this activity, I came to a big realization about how we should chew our food. The
candies really made a great example of what our digestive system would be doing if a certain food is
chewed well or not, and how it will greatly affect us and our very own body. It helps see the difference it
would make of a crushed and whole candy the way of emulsifying. I am able to grasp the objectives of
how I can relate such activity in my actual life.

VII. Conclusion:

It is important especially the way we chew our food in order for the digestive organs or the system
to properly breakdown and absorb the nutrients, as it also occurs our very own health on what and how
we eat food from the start of the mouth until it reaches stomach and so on and so on.
