Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

BrainPOP is an excellent tool to support student learning. It supports students in every grade and on every
level. It can support English Language Learners, students with visual or hearing impairments, students with
learning disabilities, and gifted students. Students that have visual impairments will be supported with
auditory assistance. Students with hearing impairments will be supported with strong auditory supports and
with closed captioning. It is also useful for helping students be prepared for class by having the students use
BrainPOP activities as a flipped classroom. This will help students to review previous knowledge, be prepared
for new information, or look ahead at what will be covered in the next class.
Lesson idea implementation:
Teacher will ask students, “Have you ever heard of the explorers Lewis and Clark?” The students will answer
and then will watch a video on Lewis and Clark from BrainPOP. After the video, students will explore the
tutorial on BrainPOP about Lewis and Clark and will create a graphic organizer on BrainPOP. When the
students have finished their graphic organizers, I will have students come up and put one of their ideas or

information from their graphic organizer onto the interactive white board. I would have students continue to
come up until the students believe that they have covered all the information. I would then cover all of the
important information that the students may have missed.

From there, the students would have to create their own story about going exploring with Lewis and Clark.
The students would be able to write their own stories about their exploration, but they would have to use
important historical facts from what they learned about Lewis and Clark. This information would come from
the graphic organizers and what the students placed on the interactive white board. Then the students will
create a project about their adventure. They could use a green screen, stop motion, or another technological
tool to create their project. When they complete their project, they will share it with the class. After everyone
in the class has shared, the class will pick their favorite completed project to share with the rest of the
students within their grade level.
Reflective Practice:
I feel that the activities that I created could impact student learning by helping students to build their
knowledge in a meaningful, fun, and creative way. The students would have the ability to explore, expand
their ideas, and create their own imaginative experience. To further extend this lesson, I could have the
students research other explorers. They would be able to choose their own explorer to research and would
gain information on that explorer and create a project to share with the class.
