I. TOPIC: Research Questions

II. OBJECTIVES:

 To give definition the meaning of Research Question and

its importance to a study.
 To know the characteristics of a good Research Question
and their role in the study.
 To have knowledge on the steps in making good Research
Questions.

III. DEFINITION OF TERMS

 Research – a systematic investigation of certain

phenomena
 Question – sentence or form of expression used to gain
Information
 Study – detailed analysis and investigation of a subject or
Situation
 Qualitative – method of observation to gather non-
numerical data
IV. DISCUSSION

Qualitative Study – aims to seek in-depth understanding of certain

phenomena in their natural setting. It does not use
numerical data rather it uses logical and systems of
inquiry therefore research questions help you to
narrow your search of data in order to avoid having
a general research.

The specificity of a study helps in creating a good

qualitative study. So, what is a research question?
Research Questions are questions that gives focus to
your study.

Research Questions – are the initial step to a study therefore it

must be: clear, focused, concise,

complex and arguable.

 A research question must be specific in order to prevent

confusion and miscommunication for example targeting on
one aspect rather than being general.
 It also must be answered thoroughly through the data in
order to be a research question.
 Few and concise words are preferred rather than lengthy
ones that are not straight to the point.
 Research questions must also be answered in a
multifaceted manner rather than a simple “yes” or “no”.
 Lastly research questions must have a number of possible
answers other than accepted facts.

If the research questions contain these characteristics then the

research can be done in a concise manner.

Developing Research Questions - are not easy and can be quite

hard to do but there are steps that
can be followed for a researcher
to make one.
1. First you have to choose a nonspecific topic that you are
interested to search on and is confident to acquire enough
data as evidence.
2. Next would be to do some initial research on the said topic to
ensure that it has not yet been done to prevent plagiarism or
duplication of work. If needed one must think if the topic is
appropriate for the assigned readers in order to prevent
miscommunication.
3. Next is to start asking open-ended questions that is related to
the general topic while taking into consideration the things you
researched on.
4. Lastly evaluate your questions whether they are relevant and
necessary enough for your research. It is important to
understand that research questions must be velar and
effective as they pave the path for the rest of the research
content.

There are primarily three types of a research question namely

descriptive, comparative and causal. Knowing which type is your
research question increases your research competence and
precision.

 Descriptive Research Question - are questions that aims to

describe your topic in order to understand opinions that are
of different variety. These are questions starting with “what
is”, “what are” and etc. It is important to know that when
using descriptive questions, it needs a more extensive
research method in order to be unbiased.
 Comparative Research Question - which is to examine two
or more groups and find out their differences and similarities.
These questions normally start with “what is the difference
between” that looks to distinguish the different features of
each. The higher the number of groups being compared the
more complex the comparative research question
becomes.
 Causal Research Question - which aims to explain the causes
of one or more phenomena. It is centered on the basis of
cause and effect and their relationship. Questions are usually
started with “what is the relationship between or amongst”
to signify their relations to one another.

Knowing that research questions are the basic unit of a study

that helps in focusing the method as well as the inquiry therefore it is
important to know the types of research questions.

V. REFLECTION

Research questions are necessary in order for our study to be

more concise and accurate. I learned that we must know how to
make research questions for it is the initial step in making a research.
Research questions can be hard to make but as long as you
generate questions that help guide you in making your research then
it is okay. I also learned that there are certain characteristics that a
research question must have in order for it to be effective, one of
these characteristics is that it must be clear in order for the readers to
understand it and avoid miscommunication.

A good research depends on the content therefore it is a must

that it is not too generalized that might bring confusion to the readers.
I learned that we can use research questions as a pathway for us to
have specific content that is relevant in our study.
