On the CD
‘The Entertainer as it appears
‘on the 1975 album Chet Atkins
‘oes o Te Movies andthe
‘recent compilation The
acoustic or aleetric,
Chet himself uses a
‘thumbptck and two,
or sometimes three,
fingers. However, it's
‘also possible to play
‘the piece using
‘Angers only, or (as in
‘our version) pick-
and.fingers. Where
possible, allow for
‘one finger covering
‘each string, so you're

‘Hoorah!’ we ory, for it's Chet Atkins time again! This month
TG transoriber KIT MORGAN takes the Sting out of this classic
ragtime piano piece with our hero's cunning arrangement.
corr Joplin, one of the great ragtim
players of this decade, composed many a
but perhaps none as universally
popular as The Entertainer. The tune was used as
the theme for the movie The Sting, which brought
st yet further public acclaim. The j
fs to have an even accompaniment and a rhythmic
int of ragtin
syncopated lead line I can only guess that
nobody actualy told Chet ‘you ean’ do that on a
guitar’, so he went ahead and eame up with this
darrangement, Before we stat, it has to be sai that
its not really suitable for beginners, but nor is it as
nightmarish as the arrangement of Duel
svhich we transcribed last month,

“The first thing to do is detune your Gth string
down a tone to D. Nest, youll need to throw away
your metronome, atleast until the second time
Ucough the theme, Feel free to experiment with
pauses and dynamies throughout the first and third
runs through, but stick to steady rhythm the
second time or you'll lose that foot-tapping’ feel
which is such an important element of the sty
‘Watch out for unexpected bass notes to; there
‘one just after beat two of the very first bar of the
‘main theme, and several more along the way
The middle section will take concentration (so
try it slowly at first), as some of the syncopition is
pretty tricky. The second half ofthis section brings
‘momentary relief by falling into a more failia
alternating bass style pattern, Once more thr
the main theme ‘freely, then isa big rallentando
into the Coda... there, that wustt so bad, was it?
And your nearest and dearest willl it encngh to
go and hny yon that hard-disk recording set-up you
always wanted. Probably 5X2
