1. Introduction
Scaffolding shall be used wherever construction operations cannot be safely done from the
ground or from part of a high structure for a height of more than 1.8 meters or where a fall from
height is possible. The type and installation technique shall be site specific and shall be suitable
for this purpose. Hydrodive construction superintendent and Scaffold Supervisor shall work
closely with the N L NG Scaffold Inspector available on the work vessel to ensure that folding
activities are performed in line with NLNG requirements.

1.1. Scope
This report covers scaffolding design and calculation note for PHC jetty fender works
maintenance.

➢ The scaffold is to be erected using tubes and fittings. working platform

➢ The scaffold working platform will be accessed via ladder from the existing jetty bridge.

1.2. Objective

➢ The objective of this report is to check the resistance of the scaffolding members and
internal stresses under load according to EUROCODE rules and ULS loading

2. Design Data and Scaffold Description

2.1. Steel Tubes

Steel tubes are in accordance with EN 12810-1, EN10025-2

Material Size (mm) Grade Yield Stress N/mm2

Steel Tube 48.3*4.0 S235JR 235

A spatial 3D model (performed using STAADPRO software) is used to achieve the structural
statics analysis and code checking according to Eurocode.

Global coordinates of the model are considered for nodes coordinates, as follows:

Axis Y is vertical looking upward.

Axis X is transversal to the structure.

Axis Z is longitudinal to the structure.

stability against sway.

3. Calculation Method
Dead Load, Live Load, wind load and water slamming load are calculated and applied to the 3D
Scaffold model and analysis is run to check resistance of tubes and stability of the scaffold with
reference to EUROCODE 3 under SLS and ULS combination. The scaffold component and
couplers are checked with reference to EN74.

4. Loadings

The basic loads and load combinations are performed as follows;

4.1. Dead Load, DL

Self-weight of tubular is provided by Staad Pro software from in built data base, Scaffold tubes
weight (48.3mm OD x 4mm) = 4.37kg/m

The under listed load are applied accordingly;

What is the density of the wood
1. Wooden board decking weight (225mm x 50mm) = 0.301kN/m2

Member loads on transoms and ledgers carrying wooden board decking will be applied with
reference to the maximum span of 1.1m.
what live load did you use
For span member loading = 0.301*0.55 = 0.17kN/m
what is the weight of the fender, provide the datasheet
2. Fender dead weight (981mm x 500mm) = 0.49kN/m2

Member loads on transoms and ledgers carrying fender weight will be applied with reference to
the maximum span of 1.1m.

For span member loading = 0.49*0.55 = 0.27kN/m

3. Couplers weight (15kN or 25kN Capacity Swivel & Right-Angle Coupler) = 2kg

Coupler loads of 0.02kN are captured among the 10% added to the self-weight of the structure.

4.2. Live Load,

Scaffold is Class 3 (EN 12811 table 3),

4. Service load = 2 kN/m2 (BS5973-1993, Table 1).

Member loads on transoms and ledgers carrying live load will be applied as member load with
reference to the widest span of 0.55m as critical span.

For 0.55m span member loading = 2*0.55 = 1.1kN/m

Area load = 6.95kN/1m2 = 6.95kN/m2 can we have unit length
multiply to get pressure?
Member loads on transoms and ledgers carrying fender weight will be applied with reference to
the maximum span of 1.1m.

4.4. Impact Force

BS EN 1991·1·7: Annex C C.2.1 (2)

Impact type: hard impact (structure is rigid and immovable and that the colliding object deforms
linearly during the impact phase.)

The maximum resulting dynamic interaction force is given by expression (C.1):

F=Vr√(km) =4.43 * √(0.819*6.95) =10.57kN

Area of Impact = length of fender * breadth of fender = 2.75*0.981 = 2.7m2

Impact force per square meter IF = 3.98kN/m2

For a span of 0.55m; IF = 2.2kN/m

Where:

Vr is the object velocity at impact;

k is the equivalent elastic stiffness of the object (i.e. the ratio between force F and total
deformation);

m is the mass of the colliding object.

Mass of fender (m) = 695kg = 6.95kN

Equivalent Elastic stiffness (k) = 422/0.515 = 0.819kN/m

Height of fall = 1m

Sliding friction coefficient = 0.3

Impact force =10.57kN

Horizontal impact force = 0.3*10.57 = 3.17kN

Area of Impact = length of fender * breadth of fender = 2.75*0.981 = 2.7m2

7.1. Beam force detail summary

(Coupler Check and Selection SSLS, SULS, OSLS, OULS combination)

From the Beam Force detail Summary and Beam End Force Detail Summary tables below, the
maximum axial force (slipping force) capable of causing the scaffold tubes to slip is 11.287kN.
Hence, to overcome this slipping force, coupler of 15kN (Class B) slipping force resistance is
selected and recommended for scaffold tubes connection.

Maximum beam horizontal deflection = 3.683mm (Beam 1763 OSLS210)

Allowable horizontal deflection (L/100) = 552/100 = 5.52mm
Thus, Maximum horizontal deflection 3.683mm < 5.52mm Allowable horizontal deflection. Hence,
horizontal deflection is Ok.
Maximum beam vertical deflection = -3.630mm (Beam 1738 SSLS39)
Allowable vertical deflection (L/100) = = 1905/100 = 19.05mm
Thus, Maximum vertical deflection -3.630mm < 19.05mm Allowable vertical deflection. Hence,
vertical deflection is Ok.

Provide scaffold drawing and

DL = Self weight + Wooden Board = 24kN + 3.973kN = 28kN
clearly indicate on the drawing
LL = Service Load + Fender load = 26.4kN +6.47kN = 32.87kN that only one scaffold is allowed to
AL = 10.57kN be install at a time using the
Destabilizing Load = DL + LL + AL = 71.44kN scaffold of total length of 11.58m

Destabilizing Moment = 71.44*1.4 = 100.02kNm

Stabilising load = 12 kentledge blocks of 5kN each = 60kN The counter weight showed on
the model is 11, please provide
Stabilising Moment = 4*60 = 240kN
the scaffold drawings showing
Over turning safety factor = 240/100.02 = 2.40 the plan, elevation and grids
2.40 > 1.5 hence satisfactory elevation of the scaffold with
counter weight
9. Summary and Conclusion

From the above analysis result output, the scaffold structure has achieved required stability and
rigidity according to EUROCODE 3 standards.
