x Heavy earthmoving equipment
Unlike most damping materials, SOUNDPAINT x Metal floors.
SP150 is a low-density product. The dry film is
light in weight without compromising high damping BENEFITS
performance. Consequently, this material is
x Tested to International marine fire standards
recommended for weight sensitive applications.
x Water based, easy application and clean up
eg. Aircraft, marine and automotive applications.
x Reduces resonant vibration
x Minimum weight for maximum performance
Vibration is absorbed by combining viscous,
x Excellent flame resistance
(energy dissipation) and elastic, (energy storage)
x Easy to install
characteristics. Vibration energy is absorbed
x Suitable for outdoor exposure
within the material and converted to heat.
x Eliminates tinniness and ringing
x Increases panel transmission loss
SOUNDPAINT SP150 effectively reduces resonant
x Ideal for weight sensitive applications
vibration. Increased transmission loss results from
x Extensional damping
the reduction of panel coincidence and panel
resonance effects.

APPLICATION GUIDE

SOUNDPAINT SP150
Water Based Vibration Damping Compound
1. Surface Preparation
The product has been specifically formulated to provide high adhesion to difficult substrates such as uncoated
Aluminium. However, the surface must be prepared as if for painting eg:
x Remove any dust, dirt, oil, grease, rust, mould-release agent, etc. from the surface.
x Abrading the surface by wire brushing, sandblasting or abrasive paper is recommended for highly polished
surfaces, to obtain the best possible adhesion
x Degrease the surface using a solvent wipe of Xylene, Toluol, Methylene Chloride or similar solvent. (Take all
necessary precautions when using flammable solvent materials. Consult the MSDS for the chosen material
before use.)
x Alternatively use a water based surfactant cleaning system (detergent). After cleaning ensure that all traces
of surfactant (detergent) are removed by flushing the surface with clean water.
x On mild and carbon steel, a rust preventing prime coat is recommended to prevent rusting.

2. Mixing
SOUNDPAINT SP150 is shipped at proper viscosity. If a thinner consistency is needed for spray by an air gun
or body deadener gun, add a small amount of methylated spirits or water (a maximum of 3% by weight) and stir
the product thoroughly.

3. Coating Thickness (Wet Film) Required for Effective Damping

SUBSTRATE IMPACT EXCITATION STEADY VIBRATION
t 0.5 t 0.7 x T
(2) (1)
Aluminium xT
Steel t 0.7 x T t 1.4 x T
Plastic t 0.3 x T t 0.5 x T

Note: (1) T = Substrate Thickness.

(2) Required coating thickness is the thickness of substrate x factor
(3) For example, the spread rate for 1mm thick coating is 1.8kg / m2
4. Application Rate and Coverage
x Maximum 3mm wet film per coat. Allow to dry before next application.
x Drying time at 20ºC and 3mm thickness is 24 hours approximately. Accelerate by heating to a maximum of
70ºC.
x Cover a minimum of 80% of total surface area.
x Small cracks may develop upon drying, however, these will not affect the performance.

5. Application Methods
a: Trowel on: Normal notched trowel used to apply a 1-3mm wet film is suitable

b: Air Spray: Pressure Pot type approach
