SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

ABSTRACT:

The sustainable development goals were established at conference of United Nations regarding

sustainable development in 2012. The purpose of setting Sustainable Development Goals was to

set some universal goals regarding economic, political and environment. This paper covers the

sustainable development goals and their implementation in different countries. The sustainable

development goals are also called as Global Goals. The United Nations adopted these goals in

2015 in order to eradicate the poverty from the root and ensure everyone safety regarding life,

respect and money. The researchers find out that how much the sustainable development goals

specified by the United Nations are adopted by various countries and people through the broad

vision. This paper covers some of the Sustainable development goals because the acting upon one

goal will give a result in other area. This paper is unique in this regard that it evaluates the goals

and their implementation in the various countries. (United Nations Development Programe, 2012)

INTRODUCTION:

The sustainable development goals are set by United Nations in order to remove poverty, make

the life of human beings more peaceful and refrain from deterioration. The sustainable

development goals set an agenda that in 2030, the world will be more peaceful, free of poverty and

hustle. The total number of goals include 17 along with 169 targets. The aim of SDGs is to handle

all the challenges and problems faced by a mankind. All these goals are interlinked with each other

and spoiling one goal or target may result in destruction of some or all the other targets or goals.

(Blanc, 2015)
To make the new policies so that they are easily applicable, the dependencies of the goals need to

be evaluated. There lie many interactions among all the targets that are evaluated by policy makers.

In the past, lack of integration and interaction across different areas regarding economics, politics

and strategic are reason for failure of previous agendas. There was lack of understanding among

the policy makers as well as in the implementers of the policies. In the broad spectrum, all the

agendas of past were criticized and faced failure because of not implementing them worldwide.

This paper explores that how the sustainable development goals reflect the objective across the

different sectors. There can be a network among goals and targets and these network among goals

are formed by the targets. The purpose is to infer the networks which lead to SDGs. The purpose

is to determine their implementation in various countries.

JUSTIFICATION OF THE TOPIC:

The purpose of selecting this topic is to interlink the humanity and engineering. There are various

sustainable development goals that can be achieved by following the footsteps of engineering. The

economy of the country is the vital part of nowadays development. This economy is made by

machinery, instruments, composites and products which are all made by engineering works. So,

the main emphasis of this topic is to infer the role of engineer and corresponding relation of this

field to the sustainable development goals.

The humanity and engineering are interlinked because as the engineers develop new rules and

machines, the world get advanced and the economy of people having low graded material

downfalls. So, an engineer can play a role in handling of sustainable development goals.
WHAT ARE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS?

There are total 17 goals which are included in SDGs. These seventeen goals are following:

1. Zero Hunger

Hunger is the final stage of poverty. When all the limits of poverty are crossed, the ultimate

result is hunger. There are many NGOs who are playing their role in eradicating the hunger,

but the world is a vast place where to feed everyone is an impossible task. According to

United Nation Report, almost 15-16% population all over the world was suffering from

hunger in 2000-2002 and that proportion reduced to 11% in 2016 which means almost 800

million people are still suffering from hunger. (Sajjad Ali 1 ID, 2018)

2. End of Poverty

One of the sustainable development goals is the end of poverty. Everyone is not capable of

enjoying the life of rich. There are many organizations that are working day and night to

help the population. The ratio of poverty is very vulnerable. Almost 750 million people are

spending their life at 1.50$ per day.

3. Quality Education

The education is the core goal of Sustainable development goals. The difference between

developing and developed countries is the education. The ratio of educated people in

developed countries is 3 in 4 children while in developing countries this ratio is 4 in 10.

That difference is remarkable that’s why it is considered as one of vital goal of SDGs.

4. Gender Equality

There always lie gender discrimination. The trend of gender inequality in various countries

is different. Every country has its own definition of gender which makes difficult to obtain
a valid trend. Almost 19% women between 20- and 40-year age are treated brutally by their

partners.

5. Clean Water and Sanitation

Health is everything to the human life. If the health of a person is spoiled, then he is unable

to do anything. Cleanliness of water is emphasized by policy makers of sustainable

development goals. In developed countries, everyone is drinking clean and pure water

while the proportion of drinking clean water is very disheartening in the poor countries.

6. Industry Innovation and Infrastructure

A developed country is known by its economy and economy is made by industries,

infrastructure and innovations done by engineers and professionals of other fields. The

innovation and infrastructure are considered the backbone of Sustainable development

Goals. For underdeveloped countries, this goal is very important to come in the race of

developed countries. (Prajal Pradhan, 2017)

7. Economic Growth

The population of world is increasing daily remarkably. Supplying of decent work to all

the population of the country is a challenge due to increased population. The resources are

very less while the people seeking for the job are more which leads to destruction of

economy of the country. The developed countries are good in this regard because they take

care of their GDP.

8. Sustainable Cities and Communities

As the countries are running to increase their economy, in the same way the population are

moving from rural areas to urban which results in the overcrowded places and accidents
eventually. There is a need of making all the places of country equally approachable to

every citizen.

9. Responsible Consumption and Production

The production of goods is the responsibility of manufacturers and engineers. They play

their role in economy by manufacturing a wide range of products. But these products will

become useless if the consumers are not ready to buy the products. In order to aware people

about the new products, different countries play role in a different way either by new plans

or strategies.

10. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

The world is running blindly behind the money. No one is ready to take care of either

himself or others. The policy makers set a goal of peace so that everyone spend his life in

a calm way. There are only some people who are acquiring justice in the world. The poor

are always looking for their rights and justice. All these can be availed if the institutions

are made strong. If the professors teach the students how to get rights and peace in the

world. (Joyeeta Gupta, 2015)

CONCLUSION:

The goals defined by the Sustainability Development Goals set United Nations explains the

devastating reason of poor and developing countries. The differences between developing and

developed countries can be nullified after following the goals set by SDGs. There are different

links between the goals and the targets. Fulfilling one goal will help the country to reach the other

goal and eventually making the economy and GDP of that country up to mark.
The implementation of these goals in various countries including Brazil, China, Chicago are

remarkable because they set their life goals by setting the goals of SGDs. Following these goals

can make the citizens educated and eventually make the economy of the country fabulous.
