Operating Instructions
Dynamic Cone Penetration Test Apparatus

Introduction

The equipment meets the requirements of IS : 4968 )Part I). It is for determining the
resistance of different soil strata to dynamic penetration of a 50mm cone and from the
results to obtain indication regarding their relative strength and density. It provides a
simple method for probing the soil strata. The resistance to penetration of the cone in
terms of number of flows per 300mm of penetration can be empirically correlated with the
bearing capacity of cohesionless soils and also the load carrying capacity of piles. Sta-
tistical methods of correlation between the module of compressibility and penetration
resistance are also available.

Description

The equipment is illustrated in the General Assembly Drawing and the numbers given
against the components of the equipment in the description below pertain to this General
Assembly Drawing.

It consists of two cones one cone without threads (1), the other with threads (6), an
adaptor (2), a driving head (9), a guide (1) for the connecting rod, a pulley (5), and a tripod
(3).

Both the cones are of 600 and 50mm diameter. The stem of one of these two cones is
without threads. This cone (1) is fitted into adaptor (2) which is further connected to the
connectinjg rod (not a part of the standard equipment). This cone is used of deep sound-
ings where it is difficult to pull it out after completion of the test and is left in the ground
after driving it to the required length.

The stem of the other cone (6) is threaded. The cone can be directly fixed to the connect-
ing rod. It is meant to be pulled out after completion of the test. For shallow depths upto
15 meters the cone with threads can be normally used.

The tripod (3) consists of three metal legs approximately 488cm long connected by a tie
belt. Each leg is made of four collapsible pieces for ease of transport. One of the three
legs is provided with fixed horizontal steps (4) to enable the operator to climb up the tripod
for fixing pulley (5), rope, etc.

2
The 65kg drive weight (7) has a central hole through which the Guide pipe assembly (8)
passes. The Guide pipe assembly (8) has a cap on one end and a drive head (9) on the
other end. The driving head (9) has coupling screws to be fitted to the Guide pipe assem-
bly (8) at one end and to the connecting rod at the other end. For keeping the connecting
rod vertical a guide (10) is provided. The guide (10) has three feet which can be fixed with
spikes (11) to the ground.

Test Procedure

Set up the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Test Apparatus as shown in the General
Assembly Drawing.

Fit the cone (without thread) to the cone adaptor which is screwed to one end of the
connecting rod (not supplied). Pass the connecting rod through the hole in the top plate
of the guide. Attach a manila rope (not a part of the standard equipment) to the chain of
the drive weight. Then pass the rope over the pulley (5). Pass the Guide pipe assembly
through the hole of the drive weight. By pulling the rope raise the drive weight to a
suitable height. Fix the driving head to the lower end of the Guide pipe assembly.
Screw on the connecting rod to the driving head. Keep this assembly vertical with the
cone resting on the ground which is to be tested.

Fit spikes on the feet of the guide for connection rod. See that the tripod is stable.
Drive the cone into the soil by allowing 65kg drive weight to fall through height of 75cm
each time. Note the number of below for 30cm penetration of cone. Repeat the process
till cone is driven to the required depth.

Maintenance

1. Exposed parts should be kept clean and greased.

2. Pulley should be oiled properly.

Note :

1. To save the equipment from damage driving may be stopped when the number
of blows for 30cm penetration exceeds 100.

2. When depth to be tested is only upto 15 meters, the cone with threads may be
used, instead of cone without threads as it can be removed.
