Girl Powered Nutrition – Regional Training

COMMUNITY SURVEY

We are asking people what they think and know about nutrition (healthy eating) as part
of the new WAGGGS Girl Powered Nutrition badge. We will keep your answers
anonymous (they will be shared with other leaders and staff).

Questions

1. What does good nutrition mean?


Good nutrition means consuming different kind of foods that provide nutrients
that the body needs in order to feel good and healthy. Good nutrition combined is
playing a significant role towards a healthy lifestyle, as well as reducing one’s risk
of chronic diseases.

2. Can you name the different food groups?


Foods are categorized into different groups such as carbohydrates group, protein
group, milk and dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and fats and sugars.
Carbohydrate foods such as pasta, rice, oatmeals, breads, and cereals give us
energy. The protein group is consist of fish, meat, and eggs that give us protein,
iron, and other minerals. The milk and dairy products contain protein and calcium
and some vitamins like vitamin B12, vitamin A and vitamin D. On the one hand,
fruits and vegetables provide lots of vitamins and chemicals known as
antioxidants that will make us healthy. Lastly, fats and sugars such as margarine,
butter, and chocolates give us a lot of energy (calories) but not many nutrients.

3. As well as eating healthily, what other things do we need to be happy and healthy?
Aside from eating healthy foods, taking exercises, having enough sleep, and
being optimistic can play a significant role for making us happy and healthy.

4. Where would you look to find reliable information about eating healthily?
We can seek professionals and practitioners in order to acquire reliable
resources in regards to eating healthy foods. Also, we can use reliable sources
from the internet/library such as books and journals.

5. How much of your plate should be covered in fruit and vegetables?


It is recommended that half of the plate at any particular meal will be fruits and
vegetables wherein about 30 percent is vegetables and 20 percent of it is fruit.

6. What types of foods or nutrients do teenage girls need more of?


The important nutrients every teenager girl need more of are energy, fats and
oils, protein, calcium, iron, zinc, and folate.

7. Do you know what WIFAs are and why people should take them? These are Weekly
Iron and Folic Acid supplements – are these available to girls aged 10 + in your
country?
No.
8. What kinds of foods should we rarely eat, and why?
We should avoid foods that contains too much chemicals such as Junk foods,
fast food products, as well as foods that undergo different processes. Also, it is
much better to rarely eat foods that are too sweet and too salty.

9. Do you think there are any nutrition problems in your community? If so, what are
they?
Yes. Malnutrition and scarcity of foods.
