Lesson 2: Osmosis Lab

Data
Record your observations in the chart below.

Observations after eggs sit in vinegar overnight. How do they feel? What do they look like? (5
points)

Leaving the eggs sit in vinegar overnight will make the egg shell dissolve, making it more
translucent, we can kind of see the egg’s yolk inside. It feel way more fragile compare when it
has a shell. The egg has a yellowish white color to it.

Observations after eggs sit in sugar solution. How do they feel compared to your first
observations of the eggs? How do they look in comparison? What has changed about the
eggs? Why do you think this change has occurred? Explain. (5 points)

After sitting in the sugar solution, the eggs become shrunk and smaller. The eggs look wrinkly
and even more fragile than when it leave the vinegar. This happened due to the fact that the
egg being made up of more water than the sugar solution. Therefore, the water molecules
move from egg through the membrane to where there are less water molecule, which is the
sugar solution, making it looks strange and wrinkle.

Observations after eggs sit in distilled water. How do they feel compared to your other
two observations of the eggs? How do they look in comparison? What has changed
about the eggs? Why do you think this change has occurred? Explain. (5 points)

After sitting in the distilled water, the egg grow way larger than before, than both of the
other experiment. The egg look plumper since the water move from the water outside,
where the water’s concentration is higher, into the egg.

Journal Questions
Answer the following three journal questions after completing your lab.
1. What are the independent and dependent variables in this lab?
Independent variables are vinegar, sugar solution, and distilled water

Dependent variables are eggs

2. Describe how osmosis caused the egg to shrink and cell?

- Osmosis caused the water to move from the egg (higher water’s concentration) into
sugar solution (lower water’s concentration), therefore the egg shrink in order to
balance the water’s concentration. The same thing happened with water in distilled
water, but the opposite, water move from the distilled water through the membrane
into the egg, and make it swell.

3. Predict what would happen if you put the egg in salt water. Explain your prediction.

- The egg will grow even larger than before because the salt’s concentration was low
so the water molecules will move through the membrane into the egg.
