Music can be found in every culture around the world.

It is a form of art that gives

entertainment and makes people dance. It has different genres accompanied by lyrics and

instruments. This is also a way to express emotions that may be hidden by a person. Music is an

essential thing for every person. Wherever they go, it cannot be avoided because it is a nature for

them to listen to some different music every day. For many people, it is a stable companion that

gives them joy, motivation, relaxation and also helps them to alleviate their worries. Music is

primarily produced using musical instruments, with musical notations that are written by

composers. Years before lyrical music was made, various forms of music such as instrumental

music were created. Instrumental music is a melodic piece or composition without lyrics, verses,

or singing. According to Britannica, Instrumental music began with the development of

percussion instruments and crude horns; stringed instruments came later.

In some recent studies, instrumental music for some children may be calming and thereby

can help cognitive performance in a situation where a child is nervous and cannot concentrate.

(Ahtisaari, Marko 2015) In connection, many parents, teachers, scholars, and even businesses are

interested in learning more about the influence of music on the cognitive development of

students. Others focus on how instrumental music impacts various aspects of cognitive

development such as perception, memory, and language skills.

Music has become such a big part of everyone’s lives that the researchers decided to

study how instrumental music affects people most especially to students. The researchers are

interested to know more about how does an instrumental music help in the cognitive

development of a student. Also, the researchers would like to look into how an instrumental

music affects the student's focus, memorization and relaxation. The purpose of this research

study is to investigate relationships between music and mental growth with regard to students'
learning and motivation. The study of the researchers can contribute to the society by giving to

the readers an idea or knowledge about the possible effects of listening to instrumental music in

their everyday life.

B. Statement of the Problem

This study is inclined to find out the effects of listening to instrumental music on the

cognitive development of students.

Furthermore, this research would like to find the answers on the following questions:

1. Does listening to instrumental music helps students in reviewing their lessons?

2. What is the impact of listening to instrumental music on retaining the memory of a Senior

High school?

3. What is the specific genre of instrumental music that more effective in the cognitive

development of a Senior High school?
