ABSTRACT

E-Pot is an eco-friendly pot made from indigenous raw materials from banana peel of
“saba”, a local type of banana found in the Philippines and from dried leaves which aims to help
the environment to reuse, reduce and recycle biodegradable materials as an innovation in the
control and management of solid waste. The Investigators offered a solution to convert waste
material into a new product to the market with an innovation that will help promote an
environmental advocacy and business opportunity.
Based on the study made by the investigators, there is a market demand in plant pots or
flower vase for garden enthusiasts, horticulturists, florists and gardeners. They are positive
about the project as it offers environmental awareness, waste control and management. The
pot suggests affordability for its price, durability for its materials and eco-friendly for its non-
toxic and non-hazardous ingredients to the environment.
The methods of producing the eco-friendly pot requires passion and patience. There
were some birth pains during the production of the product as errors and miscalculations were
committed but that does not stop the investigators to pursue their goal. At least a kilogram of
saba peel which were freely given by a “Banana Que Vendor” in the baranggay and some dried
leaves were needed to produce a pot. Tools were utilized to cut the saba peels and leaves into
small chunks and pieces, boiled to soften, blenderized to make a smoothie like substance,
filtered with cloth, molded and sun dried for three days and painted it with varnish to further
hardened the body of the pot.
The pot retained its natural brownish color, an indicative that its materials are from saba
peel and dried leaves. It has a glossy or shiny look due to the application of varnish paint,
accentuated with a red ribbon, taken free from a birthday cake. The production cost was around
75.00 Pesos only
The project was done successfully. An innovative, biodegradable, eco-friendly product
was made known to be as E-Pot. The project was found to be doable, the primary materials –
saba or banana peels and dried leaves needed are free and abundant, it can be seen locally, and
economical, the materials can be bought in small amount, around 75.00 pesos only. Tools are
accessible and available. Methods and procedures were scientifically observed, followed and
documented. The activity had made the investigators to be more environmentally aware in
terms of recycling waste materials, recognize the importance of Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act of 2000, and formulate simple business plan and opportunity.
