PRE – COLONIA PERIOD (BC - 1564)
Filipinos often lose sight of the fact that the
first period of the Philippine literary history is
the longest. Certain events from the nation’s
history had forced lowland Filipinos to begin
counting the years of history from 1521, the first
time written records by Westerners referred to
the archipelago later to be called “Las Islas
Filipinas”. However, the discovery of the
“Tabon Man” in a cave in Palawan in 1962, has
allowed us to stretch our prehistory as far as
50,000 years back.

SPANISH REGIME (1565 - 1863)

The colonization by Spain did not subject literature
development to a halt. Rather, it breathed a different
kind of life into the local literary works. European
civilization was imbued into the local traditions
through religion and institutions. During that period
of time, performing theaters were introduced and the
local languages experienced enrichment. Much
later, Spain brought about liberal ideas and a sense
of internationalism to the people of Philippines.
Similar to the period of renaissance, it has
substantial influence on local intellectuals.

NATIONALISTISC PERIOD (1864 - 1896)

A nation pertains to a stable, historically
developed community of people
with territory,economy, culture and language
united under one government. Nationalism means
love for
one’s country and its people. The influx of liberal
ideas from Europe with the opening of SuezCanal
paved the way of the Nationalistic
period.Nationalistic period covers the Propaganda
movements and the
Revolutionarymovement. Propaganda means the
good reforms to be established.

UNITED STATES COLONIAL RULE (1910 - 1945)

The Filipino Revolutionists won against the
Spaniards whocolonized us for more than 300
years. Our flag was hoisted onJune 12, 1898 as a
symbol of our independence. Gen. EmilioAguinaldo
was elected the first President of the
PhilippineRepublic but this was short-lived.The Fil.-
American was resulted in the defeat of Gen.
MiguelMalvar in

1903.The peace movements started as early as 1900. ManyFilipinos started writingagain and the nationalism
of thepeople remained undaunted.

JAPANESE OCCUPATION (1942 - 1944)

The Japanese occupation of the Philippines
occurred between 1942 and 1945, when
Imperial Japan occupied the Commonwealth of
the Philippines during World War II.
The invasion of the Philippines started on 8
December 1941, ten hours after the attack on
Pearl Harbor. As at Pearl Harbor, American
aircraft were severely damaged in the initial
Japanese attack.
CONTEMPORARY PERIOD (1960 - PRESENT)
The contemporary movement toward the use
of native languages in Filipino literature was slow to
begin due to the oppressive martial-law dictatorship
of Ferdinand Marcos from 1972 to 1986. However,
following the end of the dictatorship, the Philippines
undertook an effort to resurface their native
language literary history, and the Philippine
Commission on Higher Education made it
obligatory to teach Philippine literature to students.
