Hi, I’m Duc and I’m gonna make a small comparison between Hanoi when it was invaded by
French and Hanoi these days.
First of all, many people visiting Hanoi thinks that Hanoi is a completely modern city and it’s not
very old. However, only few people know that this city has been over 1000 years old, and a lot
of buildings look very new but they were actually built for over 100 years. The infrastructure
style of Hanoi is mainly influenced by the French style, and it is still maintained until now. Let’s
have a look at these pictures so that you can easily compare.
Here, we have the glory Hanoi Opera House, which has been mentioned recently. This building
is the signature of the French-influenced architecture in Hanoi. The interesting thing is this
house hasn’t changed anything from the outside. This place is still in use with daily concerts, so
if you’d like to watch performances, you can book your tickets right away.
The second place I’d like to talk about is the Dong Xuan market. In the past, the market is the
largest marketing place in Hanoi, and people, especially the visitors, come here to buy
souvenirs. From these pictures, the market has now changed dramatically, from an old place
has modernized and it looks very appealing now. People often come here in the evening
because this is when the market is busiest.
Here are the images of Long Bien bridge, a place considered as the symbol of Hanoi. This
bridge was built from 1899 to 1902, and it has taken the lives of hundreds of builders due to the
difficulties in building the bridge. When the French invaded Vietnam, many people lived under
the bridge, but now all of these lands have turned into fields and people plant many banana
trees there.
Finally, I want to introduce to you the Trang Tien Plaza. This is a luxurious shopping mall with a
lot of things in stock. This place in the past was once a grocery store, where citizens around
Hanoi came here to buy things to help making their lives better. When there was war, the mall
was severely suffered from the destruction but it has been adjusted. Nowadays, people often
come here so that they can buy fashionable clothes as well as food.
So, based on the places that I have mentioned above, I personally think that Hanoi has
undergone many changes and all the changes were made to make the city more beautiful.
That’s the end of our presentation. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!
