Wave System:
When a body is moved through fluid, the speed of the
particles in the fluid and hence the pressure will change from point to point.
A body moving horizontally near the free surface cause a
disturbance of this surface.
Due to pressure differences, the fluid level changes which
travel at the same velocity as the body itself.

NAME 323: RESISTANCE & PROPULSION OF SHIPS Kelvin Wave System:
About 1900 Lord Kelvin was working on the problem of wave-
making.
He considered a single pressure point traveling in a straight
line over the surface of the water, sending out waves that combine to form a characteristic pattern.
The pattern consists of a system of transverse waves and a
system of divergent waves radiating from the point.

The Kelvin wave pattern illustrates and explains many of the
features of the ship-wave system. In front of ship there is a high pressure area and therefore a noticeable bow wave is formed as a part of the transverse and diverging wave system. The crest lines of the transverse waves will be normal to the direction of motion near the hull, bending back as they approach the divergent system. Also at the shoulders of the hull and at the stern, wave systems are formed. A wave pattern for a ship is sketched in the figure.

In many cases, it is possible to consider the resultant
wave system to be built up of four components:
1. The bow wave system, owing to the high pressure area in
the vicinity of the bow.
2. The forward shoulder wave system, owing to the low
pressure area around the shoulder.
3. The aft shoulder wave system, owing to the low pressure
area around the aft shoulder.
4. The stern wave system, owing to the high pressure area at
the bow.

The four components of the ship’s wave system will be
capable of interfering with one another.
Consider a wedge-shaped body of infinitely great draught and
water lines as shown in the figure. The body consists of a parallel middle part and of wedge-shaped fore and aft bodies, each of length l.

The symmetrical surface disturbance caused in accordance
with Bernoulli’s equation is sometimes called the primary wave system and the bow, shoulder and stern wave systems are called secondary wave systems.
Superimposing the five wave systems gives the resultant wave
system
