Define open and closed class words.

Identify which parts of speech belong to


open and closed word classes.
OPEN CLASS WORDS (content/lexical):
Huge categories of words that change constantly and easily and admits new members are called
open class words.
 New words can readily be coined to add it (i.e. girl or girls)
 Their membership is fairly open-ended i.e. these words have different meanings
 A member of one class may be identical in spelling or pronunciation with a member of
another class (i.e. We Vwalk daily)
EXAMPLES

3. Walk
4. Sweet
5. Yesterday.
6. Calm
7. Lovely.
8. Sing
9. Numbers.
10. Dog

CLOSED CLASS WORDS (function words):


Class of words that does not admits new members and are smaller in number are known as closed
words.
 They tend to stay around a long time
 Although changes can occur over very long periods of time
 Are specific in meaning

7. Under.
8. Over

PARTS OF SPEECH IN OPEN AND CLOSED WORD CLASSES
Each word belongs to a word class. The word classic a word is known as part-of-speech of that
word. There are right basic parts of speech:
Noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, adverb, conjunction, article

OPEN CLASS
NOUN: They typically name things or concepts e.g. girl, beauty, flower etc.
VERB: They can describe actions, states and conditions e.g. sing, run, become, etc.
ADJECTIVE: Describes noun e.g. best, calm, lovely, etc.
ADVERB: They usually give more information about the verb e.g. sadly, gratefully, wildly etc.

CLOSED CLASS
PRONOUNS: Used to refer nouns e.g. he, she, it, who, I etc.
CONJUNCTIONS: Join phrases or sentences e.g. and, or, but, that etc.
PREPOSITIONS: Usually show how one thing is related to other e.g. at, by, for, in etc.
ARTICLES: Word used with a noun to specify it e.g. a, the, an etc.
