Aquatic Biodiversity: Human Activities Affect Marine
Ecosystems
GRADE LEVEL: -
TIME ALLOTMENT: 1 hour
TEACHER: Ms. Janine Mendoza
CONTENT:
Human Activities That Affects Are Disrupting And Degrading Marine Systems
CONTENT STANDARD:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of the different human activities that
disrupts and degrades Marine System.
LEARNING COMPETENCY:
The learners should be able to recognize the different human activities, how it affects
the marine system and on how to prevent such disruption and degrading.
LEARNING MATERIALS:
Living in the Environment. Miller, T. and Spoolman, S. 2006. pp.171-172.
OBJECTIVES:
With the use of locally-available materials in the community, the 9 students should be
able to:
1. identify the different human activities that disrupts and degrades the marine
system.
2. give the common human activities in their surroundings.
3. perform activity and point out reactions in the water.
4. observe teamwork and cooperation in doing the activities.
5. identify the causes and its effect in the marine system.
6. propose solutions the pollutions caused by human activities.

1. ELICIT- 3mins MATERIALS

Have the students recall the importance of Marine
system. Ask them to briefly explain them.

Emphasize that Marine system is important

because water covers ¾ of the world and our
planet is surrounded by water. Through Socratic
method or the Art of questioning, and using the
surroundings of Talisay especially in places near
the sea, let the students realize the happenings or
specifically the pollution that is rampant in the
bodies of water. This will serve as a spring board
in asking the trivial questions later on.

2. ENGAGE- 5mins
Show a picture of polluted body of water and let Projector
the students describe it. Laptop
Picture of polluted sea
Then ask the following questions:
1. What can you say about the picture?
2. What can you see?
Students are expected to describe it as polluted
water. Ask these follow up questions:
3. What do you think is the cause of the pollution?
4. Do you know some bodies of water located
here in Talisay which are polluted also?
5. Who or what are the reasons behind?

3. EXPLORE- 20mins _________________________________
Projector
Divide the students into groups of five. Each Laptop
group has its own leader, secretary, presenter Worksheet
and two (2) material managers. The students will Grease
bring out the materials that were assigned to ink
bring. Discuss the objectives and procedure of the food coloring
activities. Further, review safety procedures in the sand
conduct of experiment. torn garbage
Empty Container/glass
Let the students perform the activity and answer Water
the guide questions. Do maximum supervision Stirrer
while the students perform the group activity.

Activity: Investigating the Changes Occurs in

the Water in Different Causes
1. Describe the color, odor, texture of the water
before and after placing or mixing the substance
assigned to the group. (grease, ink, food coloring,
sand, torn garbage) Observe well.
2. Explain the reaction of the water.
3.Define the changes and the factor of change.

4. EXPLAIN- 10mins
Worksheet
After the activity, the students present their
answers and observations to the guide questions.
A representative in each group will present and
discuss the observations and answers to the
guide questions based on the experiments
conducted.

5. ELABORATE- 10mins
Projector
Strengthen the concepts gained by the students Laptop
in the activities through lecture-discussion and Marker
video-clip presentation containing the different White board
human activities that disrupt and degrade the
marine system. Correct misconceptions, as the
need arises.

Further, discuss the possible ways on how to

prevent pollution on the bodies of water.

Ask the class to create solutions to prevent the

phenomena being discussed using the local
bodies of water available in the city. Ask other
concerns about marine system pollutions.

1. Planet Earth is covered with ¾ of Land and ¼
of water.
2. Human activities threaten aquatic biodiversity.
3. Overfishing depletes population of commercial
fish species.
4. Climate change from burning fossil fuels cannot
affect the marine system.
5. Most coral reefs are cared by the people.

7. EXTEND- 2mins
Students (in same group) will be given the Laptop
