Speech of President Corazon Aquino during the Joint Session of the U.S. Congress,
September 18, 1986

Former President Corazon Aquino was an honourable women who fights our
rights to be free from the Martial Law. I am astonished on her bravery that even if she was a
woman, she voice out her thoughts and served her country will all her might. Her speech in
Washington D.C. on September 18, 1986 was very outstanding. I am swayed on the way she
spoke every word with dignity and full of emotion.
For every word she spoke, I feel that I am in that situation. I can imagine on
sufferings of Ninoy Aquino. I felt tremendous pain and sadness to the family of Corazon Aquino
and to Ninoy Aquino himself. To sacrifice yourself in order for your country to live peacefully
and happily takes a lot of courage. I adore them, I respect them. No one can live up their legacy.
For me, they are one of the heroes of our country. On her speech, she said that Ninoy Aquino’s
death was the sacrifice to be able for the Filipinos to be free. I concur this statement because it
serves as an eye-opener for the Filipino to fight for their freedom. It is just sad that one life
should be sacrificed in order for us to be free. I am amazed on how fluent Corazon Aquino spoke
on her speech. I can tell that her speech comes from her heart because it is sincere and heart-
warming. On her speech she said “As I came to power peacefully, so shall I keep it. That is my
contract with my people and my commitment to God. He had willed that the blood drawn with
the lash shall not, in my country, be paid by blood drawn by sword but by the tearful joy of
reconciliation.” How I wish that this saying should be applied to our country. That there would
be no more war or fights between Filipinos. I wish that the administration should protect our
rights and exercise it correctly. Also, I commend the audience of Corazon Aquino on her speech
because they behave well and respected Corazon Aquino even though they came from different
races. And her ending sentence where she invited the America to join us in building our new
home with democracy was very outstanding. It sounds so satisfying for me when the Americans
clapped their hands showing their affirmation on this statement of Corazon Aquino.
Corazon Aquino was the first woman to become the President of the Philippines.
Her accomplishment as the president were very amazing. I am thankful that she become the
president. With her husband, we achieve our freedom. In my eyes, they are the true heroes of our
country. What an epic speech! I felt like I watch a movie full of action, drama and happiness.
One of the best speech that I have heard.
