Saboo Siddik College of Engineering

Since April 1936
Our Research from the field
visit
• The Architecture of this college is very old as it was built 83 years
ago. The exterior of the building remains to be very old but the
interior are being renovated into the modern type of architecture.
• It is a 5 story building which accommodates workshops,
laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, drawing halls, student's
common room, seminar hall, library, reading-rooms, offices.
• The architecture has been inspired from the Islamic style of
architecture (we concurred this by looking as the Jaali design ,the
domes and the dome shaped doors).
• The Mohammed Haji Saboo Siddik Institute is a Muslim Minority
Institution. Majority of the student population in this college is
Muslim although there are Christians and Hindus as well but not in
large numbers.
Secondary Research

• The Mohammed Haji Saboo Siddik Institute (A Muslim Minority

Institution) owes its existence to the of late Mohammed, son of
Haji Saboo Siddik, who bequeathed a large sum of money for
establishing, conducting and managing this Institution for
imparting Vocational, Technical and Industrial training and
education.
• The value of the assets, exceeded Rupees Three Crore at the time
of donation. Which is a huge amount spend considering the prices
of construction in 1936.
• Originally, the institute was founded in the year 1936 as a Trade
School with the objective of turning out artisans in some industrial
arts and crafts. A major re-organisation in its curriculum took place
in the year 1944, as a result of which few more Trades and
Certificate courses were started. From the year 1958-2002, the
college ket on adding courses in engineering.
• The Institution is managed and administrated by the Anjuman-i-
Islam as the sole trustee. The Anjuman-i-Islam is the premier and
the largest institution representing Muslim community in the
country.
The Style of Architecture

• As it is a Muslim Minority Institution built by the son of

Haji Saboo Siddik, the architecture has some elements
that are inspired by the Islamic style of architecture.
• Islamic style comprises the architectural styles of
building associated with islam . There were OGEE type
dome structures.
• This building has four domes and all the corridor
windows are Indo - islamic . Also jali like structure can
be seen in some rooms in the builtding like the ones in
mosque .
• They didn’t just follow strictly the islamic architecture
, they modified it ( the windows are stretched long to
meet the needs of the college ambience ) .
• Having seen most of the islamic buildings like mosques
having heavy embellishments and a lot of marble work,
this one had very minimalistic approach in the
decoration aspect.
What has changed since 1936

• The institute was founded in the year 1936 as a Trade

School with the objective of turning out artisans in some
industrial arts and crafts and now it functions as a
engineering institute.
• By comparing the pictures that we found on the internet
and the ones that we took, we realized that the main
cement ground of the college which was used as a
basketball court has now been constructed into a parking
space.
• The library of the College is housed in a separate newly-
constructed building and is furnished with reference
section and reading-rooms for students and staff. A very
sophisticated Seminar Hall furnished with the most modern
equipment was inaugurated in 2001.
• The classes, cafeteria, staff rooms, toilets have been
modernized with the additions of AC's ,better benches and
arrangements for better ventilation.
• The front gate college name banner was also changed.
