Air Conditioning System Presentation: A318/A319/A320/A321 General Familiarization Course Air Conditioning
Like the majority of the systems on the A320 family, the air conditioning
system is fully automatic.
We will begin our study of the system by first looking at the air conditioning
packs.
The A320 family is equipped with two air conditioning packs located in the
wing root area forward of the landing gear bay.

Since the different areas of the aircraft may require different amounts of

The PACK FLOW selector is used to select the desired pack flow:
- LO: 80% of normal flow.
- NORM: 100% of normal flow.
- HI: 120% of normal flow.
For the A321 version, a pushbutton switch enables 2 selections:
- ECON FLOW pressed in: 80% to 100% of normal flow.
- ECON FLOW released out: 100% to 120% of normal flow.
For the A318 version, a pushbutton switch enables 2 selections:
- HI FLOW pressed in: 100% of normal flow.
- HI FLOW released out: 120% of normal flow.
NOTE: Whatever the pack flow selector position, high flow is automatically
controlled in case of single pack operation or APU bleed supply.

The mixer unit is located at the rear of the forward cargo compartment. It
mixes air from the packs and recirculated air from the cabin prior to
distribution to each zone.
The hot air pressure regulating valve, located behind the mixer unit, is
electrically controlled and pneumatically operated. The valve is automatically
controlled to close by the zone controller (ACSC for A318) in case of overheat
or overpressure.
The 3 identical trim air valves (for cockpit, forward cabin and aft cabin zones)
are located downstream of the hot air PRV (TAPRV for A318)
They are electrically controlled and operated. The zone controller (ACSC for
A318) controls the trim air valve positions to add hot air if required.
2 identical cabin fans, on each side of the mixer unit, recirculate air from the
cabin (taken into the cargo area) to the mixer unit.

The zone controller manages the cockpit, forward and aft cabin zone

In case of zone controller signal loss, each pack controller will regulate its pack
outlet temperature at a fixed value.

ACSC 1,
1, 22
Two identical air conditioning system controllers (ACSC) monitor and control
the system as follows:
- zone temperature control
- pack flow and temperature control
- system and component monitoring
- communication with other aircraft systems
These functions are divided between both ACSC with ACSC 1 controlling
flight deck and Pack 1and ACSC 2 controlling the cabin (fwd/ aft) and Pack 2.
When the RAM AIR pushbutton switch is pressed in, the ram air flap is
opened.
The a/c must descend to less than 10000 feet and cabin differential pressure
should be less than 1 psi. When these conditions are met, the outflow valve will
half open.

When you work on aircraft, make sure you obey all the AMM procedures. This
will prevent injury to persons and/or damage to the aircraft. Here is an
overview of the main safety procedures relative to the air conditioning system.
Do not use conditioned air from the packs at the same time as air from the low
pressure ground units. This can cause damage to the check valves.
When you are in contact with harmful products, use protective clothing, rubber
gloves and goggles.
Do not touch a component until it is sufficiently cool to prevent burns.
Make sure that there are no persons or equipment near the ram air inlets or the
ram air outlets. Hot exhaust gases can cause injury to persons and/or damage to
equipment.
Keep away from the moving and energized parts when you operate or test the
valves and the flaps.

CLOSED configuration.
This is the normal in-flight configuration.
When the small internal flap on the extract valve (outlet valve for A318) is open
the extract (outlet for A318) valve indication is in an intermediate position.
The VENTILATION panel , on the overhead panel contains two p/bs associated
with the ventilation system. These switches must be in lights out position for
normal system operation. The avionics ventilation system is fully automatic and
requires no pilot input.
In case of low flow detected in the BLOWER or EXTRACT duct, the related
switch should be set to the override position in response to the ECAM
procedure.
In case of avionics smoke, both BLOWER and EXTRACT switches should be
set to the override position in response to the smoke removal ECAM procedure.

The skin air inlet valve is located on the LH skin of the fuselage.
The valve is fully open in OPEN CIRCUIT configuration, fully closed in
CLOSED CIRCUIT configuration.
The skin air outlet valve is located on the RH skin of the fuselage.
The valve is fully open in OPEN CIRCUIT configuration, partially open in
INTERMEDIATE CIRCUIT configuration (by means of the small internal flap)
and fully closed in CLOSED CIRCUIT configuration.
In order to improve A/C dispatch the valves are fitted with a manual override
and deactivation device.
The blower and extract fans insure a proper air circulation in the avionics
compartment. The fans are identical and interchangeable. In case of fan overheat
the body is equipped with a fault light and a reset button.
The skin heat exchanger is located in the upper fuselage section, between
frames.

When you work on aircraft, make sure you obey all the AMM procedures. This
will prevent injury to persons and/or damage to the aircraft. Here is an overview
of the main safety procedures relative to the ventilation system.
Keep away from the moving and energized parts when you operate or test the
valves and the flaps.
When you are in contact with harmful products, use protective clothing, rubber
gloves and goggles.
Do not touch a component until it is sufficiently cool to prevent burns.
Do not use force to turn the handles of the valves. Use the shear pins.
