Discussion Board Prompt

The work of Carl Whitaker and Virginia Satir infused the concepts of emotions and feelings into our conceptualization of familial
problems. With the focus on the here and now, experiential therapist believed that as people experience a problem it is at that moment
that they can best learn to manage the exhibited behavior given the high emotional times. In essence, the crisis creates a catharsis
which functions as a motivator for change, but before change can happen the family has to first recognize their displayed behavior
based on their emotional reactivity during the crisis. After working through the vignette of Zaid and Lisa, collaborate with your group
partners and discus the foundational constructs of Experiential Family Therapy. As part of your discussion, develop and present a case
conceptualization that would highlight the underlying challenges presented by Zaid and Lisa and be certain to use the language of
Experiential Family Therapy to articulate your case conceptualization (you should each offer a case conceptualization). In addition, be
sure to articulate your analysis of dysfunctional communication patterns and integrate interventions (no less than three) that you would
use as a therapist working with the Zaid and Lisa specific to Experiential Family Therapy.

Vignette
Zaid [age 28, works as a manager for a construction company] and Lisa [age 31, works as a middle school teacher], have come in for
therapy given the challenges they are facing. They have been married for 5 years and this is their first time in therapy.

Zaid says that he cannot take living with Lisa anymore. She always has some type of illness that prevents them from having any fun.

Lisa says that Zaid is a brute who constantly wants to go out, have some beers, dance, and party. She says that he does not want to
settle down.

Zaid says that Lisa fakes being ill in order to get him to simply stay at home and do nothing. In a frustrated voice he remarks, the
doctors can never find anything wrong with her. She claims to feel lethargic and fatigued. Then she claims to have heart
palpitations. She has phantom pains in her side that there is no medical explanation for. They have been to every specialist possible
and no one ever has an answer.

Lisa being to tear up and says that her ailments are not fake. The pain she feels are not in her head, as one of the doctors stated. She
continued to say that Zaid does not understand her and does not care to understand what she is going through. He simply wants to go
out and have fun. He also conveniently forgets to share the affair he had.
Zaid in an agitated manner shares that the alleged “affair” was 3 years ago. He shared that the woman Lisa is talking about was a co-
worker and nothing happened between them except for text messages where he shared the problems he was having with Lisa. Zaid
thinks that Lisa exhibits the physical symptoms to manipulate him into doing what she wants to do. In a sarcastic tone he says that the
symptoms magically appear when she is asked to go somewhere, she does not want to go.

Lisa looks at Zaid and says, I still cannot believe that you would share our personal problems with another woman. Why would she
need to know that we are not able to have children? I’m tired as well.

Discussion Board Rubric

After completing the required reading each week, I am sure you have thoughts about the different constructs, processes,

clinical applications, and many other exploratory ideas. The discussion board assignments are designed to help you reinforce your

thoughts as you share them with your discussion group. Enhance your ideas as you locate and share sources other than the text.

Enhance the learning of others as you share themes and proficiencies others have yet to experience. It is imperative that you do not

treat the discussion board assignment as busywork. Therefore, all Video responses (initial and reply posts) should integrate the reading

assignments leading to and including the specific week in which the discussion board is assigned. The goal is to have an intellectual

discussion driven by facts found in the reading assignments, peer reviewed sources, and personal illustrations that would demonstrate

your understanding of the information (be certain to cite your sources). Secondarily, the discussions should help each member to

clarify specific information and to develop new ideas about the information read and presented.
Unlike other discussion board assignments, your responses to one another will be captured by video. The discussion prompt

serves as the initial post to which all members of the group will respond. Your responses must be captured in a three to five minute

video and uploaded for your group to review and respond. The difference here is that each response must build upon the thoughts,

theory, ideas, or suggestions of the initial post and any other subsequent posts. In essence, you are engaged in an asynchronous

discussion. At minimum, you must respond three times during the week the discussion is held. Your responses must be on different

days to allow for others to engage in the discussion. It is important to remember that you are not selecting a video to review and

respond to, but instead you are reviewing all the videos and responding to the discussion as a whole.

To earn the highest points allocated towards the discussion you should comply with the following recommendations. 1)

Complete your required reading and allow yourself enough time to read the material more than once. 2) Link into the university

library and research information regarding the topic of discussion. 3) Read the found material and analyze its influence over your

ideas regarding the subject matter. 4) Read/View the discussion prompt more than once. 5) Review each submitted video as you will

be adding to the discussion. 6) Develop a written script of your ideas in relationship to the discussion prompt. 7) Follow your written

script as you record your video response. 8) Upload your video response and wait a day before additionally contributing to the

ongoing discussion on the subject matter.

Guidelines:

1. Please use the thread title as the title of your response.

2. Review the discussion prompt (twice) before you respond.

3. All first posts are due by the end of day 11:59 PM Thursday of the assigned week.

4. All second posts are due by 11:59 pm on Friday of the assigned week.

5. All third posts are due by 11:59 pm on Sunday of the assigned week.

6. All discussion board questions will be closed at 11:59 pm on the Sunday before your next class.

7. You should have a total of three posts or more for each discussion assignment.

Please view pages three – eight of this document for the rubric.
