Internal Examination -I

Class: S.E(auto) SEM III Subject: Strength of material Marks: 20M Duration: 1Hour
Note: 1. Assume suitable data wherever necessary.

2. All question are compulsory

Q[ 1 ] Attempt Any Five [Each question carry 2 marks]

(a) Draw the stress strain curve for ductile material

(b) Define1) Poisson ratio 2) Bulk modulus

(c) State the relation between Modulus of Elasticity and Bulk Modulus

(d) Derieve the relation between three elastic constants(E,G&K)

(e)State Hooks law

(f) A rod is 2 m long at 10oC Find the expansion of the rod when temperature is raised to 80oC.If this
expansion is prevented find the stresses in the material Take E=1ˣ105N/mm2 and α =0.000012 per oC

Q[ 2 ] Attempt Any One [Each question carry 5 marks]

(a) A compound tube consists of a steel tube of 140 mm internal diameter and 160mm
external diameter and an outer brass tube of 160 mm internal diameter .and 180 mm external
diameter. Both the two tubes are of 1.5 m length. if the compound tube carries an axial
compressive load of 900 kN find its reduction in length. Also, find the stresses and the loads
carried by each tube.Eb= 1ˣ105N/mm2;,' Es =2ˣ105N/mm2
(b) Derieve the Elongation of a bar due to its self weight

Q[ 3 ] Attempt Any One [Each question carry 5 marks]

(a) Two mutually perpendicular planes of an element of material are subjected to tensile stress of 105
105N/mm2 , compressive stress of 35 and shear stress of 70N/mm2 at an angle of 30o calculate
the principal stress and normal stress and shear stress by graphical method

(b) A beam AB 10 m long is simply supported at its ends A and B.IT carries a UDL of 20KN/m for a
distance from the left end and a concentrated load of 40 KN at a distance of 2 m from right end B .Draw
