But Old Mouse always told the young mice not to go upstairs. “There’s something bad up there,” he said. “You must stay down here.” The mice liked living in the house. | They could play all day long in the | kitchen. They got food from the | dustbin next door. Sometimes at night, the mice could hear noises coming from upstairs. Then they hid under their blankets. The smallest mouse was called Sam. One day, Sam saw a butterfly in the kitchen. It was flapping its wings, but it was stuck in a web. The butterfly looked very sad. That night, Sam couldn’t sleep. He was thinking about flying. He wanted some red and blue wings like the butterfly. So, Sam helped the butterfly. He pulled it out of the web. Sam saw the butterfly fly out of the window. He saw it fly away. Now Sam wanted to fly too. Sam went out into the hall and looked up at the window. He saw something there. What a surprise he got! Suddenly, Sam heard a noise. It was a flapping noise coming from upstairs. “My butterfly has come back!” said Sam. 2 “A mouse with wings!” said Sam. It was flapping at the window. Then Sam saw it fly away. Sam went back to bed and had a big think. He had seen a mouse with wings, now he wanted wings. He was going to get some! The next morning, Sam went out into the garden to look for some wings. “What are you doing?” asked the other mice. “It's a surprise,” said Sam. Sam looked everywhere for some wings. In the end, he found some under a tree. He took the wings back to the house. Sam tied the wings onto his arms. They were not red or blue, they were brown. It didn’t matter. Sam just wanted to fly. Sam climbed up three stairs. This was it! He was going to fly! Sam flapped his wings and jumped. Oh no! Sam wasn't flying. He was. falling. He flapped his wings, but it was no good. He landed with a bump. The wings had broken. Sam started to cry. Then he heard a flapping noise. “What's the matter?” somebody asked. “You are the mouse with wings!” said Sam. “No, I'm not.
