 Answers to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately.


 You will not be allowed to write during the first 15 minutes.
 This time is to be spent in reading the question paper.
 The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the
answers.
 The intended marks for the questions or parts of questions are given
alongside the questions.
 Attempt 5 questions in all. Note that Q3 & Q5 have internal options.

SECTION - A
(POETRY)
Q. 1. Read the following extract and answer the questions:

It grows dark and dim on the land and sky, and we cannot tell
where we are going.
Suddenly you call me and ask me in a whisper, "What light is
that near the bank?"
a. Name the poet and the poem from which the above extract is taken. (2)
b. Who calls whom, where were they going? (3)
c. What happens after they spot the light near the bank and what does the protagonist
do? (3)
Q. 2. Read the following extract and answer the questions:

I have within my pantry good store of all that’s nice;


I’m sure you’re very welcome; will you please to take a slice?”
“O no, no,” said the little fly, “kind sir, that cannot be;
I’ve heard what’s in your pantry, and I do not wish to see.”

a. Explain how this poem is an example of ‘Anthropomorphism’. (2)


b. The fly says that she has heard what is there in the spider’s pantry. What, according
to you, has she heard? Do you agree with her? Give reasons for your answer? (3)
c. Do you think the fly will fall into the Spider’s trap? Give reasons for your answer. (3)

Q. 3. Read the following extract and answer the questions:

Come soon oh evening so I can rest my brow!


Come soon night to soothe me somehow!
Come soon the calm of the dark,
For I want to be as free as a lark!

a. List any two things the poet has to do every day. (2)
b. What is the poet asking for and why? (3)
c. Explain the theme of this poem? (3)

Or

"Watch out!" the dentist shrieked and started climbing up the wall.
"He's after me! He's after you! He's going to eat us all!"
"Don't be a twit," the lady said, and flashed a gorgeous smile.
a. What is the meaning of the word ‘twit’? Why did the lady call the dentist a twit? (2)
b. Why did the dentist advise the lady to watch out? Do you think the lady needs to
watch out? Explain why or why not? (3)
c. Should people let their wild pets scare strangers even though they are harmless?
Justify your answer with suitable reasons. (3)

(Prose)

Q. 4. Read the following extract and answer the questions:

Finally, he stole them all, thinking to himself that three cheetahs would undoubtedly be
better than one.

a. Who steals the cheetah’s cubs and why? (2)


b. How did the cheetah finally get her cubs back? (3)
c. Do you think stealing the cheetah’s cubs was the right thing to do? Explain why? (3)

Q. 5. Read the following extract and answer the questions:

"Quick, Dorothy!" she screamed. "Run for the cellar!”

a. Who asked Dorothy to run to the cellar and why? (2)


b. What do you understand by the word ‘setting’? Describe the setting of this story. (3)
c. Why could Dorothy not reach the cellar in time and what happens as a result? What
does this show about her character? (3)

Or
I had a second arrow ready should I need it. I fitted an arrow and pulled back the string,
aiming at his head.

a. Who was aiming at whose head? (2)


b. Did the person actually shoot the arrow? What did the person do and why? (3)
c. Analyse and list what the person’s thoughts might have been as he/she stood on the
rock, ready to kill. (3)

Q. 6. Read the following extract and answer the questions:

“A new Golden Age shall come, brighter and better by far than the old!”

a) Why were the olden days not as good as the new golden age? How did the
people live before the golden age? (2)

b) Who was punished for bringing about the change, by whom and how?
(3)
c) Do you think the person who brought about this change was a hero? Give any
three character traits and justify your opinion about him/her. (3)
