Antibiotics
Chemical substances that kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria

Types of antibiotics
n Natural products (from bacteria, fungi)
n Synthetic (from chemists)
n Semi-synthetic – natural products chemically modified in the laboratory

Effects of antibiotics
n Bactericidal (kill bacteria)
n Bacteriostatic (inhibit growth but do not kill bacteria)

Characteristics of a Good Antibiotic

Kills or inhibits the growth of bacteria at low concentrations
Broad spectrum
e.g (Chloramphenicol)

Minimal side effects

n Due to direct effects of antibiotic itself
n Due to effects on the normal microflora of the body

Appropriate pharmacokinetic properties

n Must get to the site of infection in high concentrations
n Distribution influences mode of administration (oral, injected)

Effects of antibiotics
n Bactericidal (kill bacteria)
n Bacteriostatic (inhibit growth but do not kill bacteria)

Importance of antibiotics
Cure acute infections, e.g., bacterial pneumonia
Curing previously incurable infections, e.g., ulcers, others(?)
Prophylaxis/treatment of surgical patients
Cancer chemotherapy – destroys neutrophils temporarily
