Electronics/Robotics Unit TIJ1O0_2019 - 2020

Let there be Light!

The Arduino provides electricity (electron flow) to a Light Emitting Diode (LED) to turn on the light

An LED has to be connected with the correct polarity in the circuit

The positive side of the LED must connect to the positive side of the circuit
The negative side of the LED must connect to the negative side of the circuit

How do we know the polarity of an LED?

Anode is positive (remember “A+” - the unit mark you want!)

Cathode is negative

1. Flat edge of the LED lens - Flat edge is negative

Always reliable - best method to determine polarity

2. Size of flag inside LED

“Large flag” is Negative
“Small flag” is Positive
But can’t always see inside LED lens

3. Length of “leads”
Short lead is Negative
Long lead is Positive
Not reliable as the leads can be cut or broken
