Panamá the Old or Old Panamá

Is the name of the archeological site where the city of Panama was located
since its foundation in 1519, until 1671.

The city was moved to a new location, about ten kilometres southwest, after
being destroyed due to an attack from pirate Henry Morgan, at the beginning
of the decade of 1670.

From the original city, considerated as the first European settlement in the
pacific coast of America, remain today numerous ruins that make up this
archeological site.

The city, founded by Pedro Arias Dávila, better nows as Predarias Dávila, in
august 15th, 1519, was placed in a zone originally occupied by a native
community, for this reason, in this site there has been found many
archeological evidences of pre-columbian cultures.

From this place many expeditions that conquered the Inca empire from the
Perú in 1532 were launched, and was a stop in one of the most important
commercial routes of the American continent, where most of the gold and
silver exploded by the Spanish here in America, was transported.

By 1541 the city had a population of around 4 000, including Spanish, natives
and black slaves. In 1607, the city had several streets, a major plaza and
another two squares.
