INVESTIGATIVE ASSIGNMENT

1. Demonstrate that diverse images can throw up connections

 Identify and explain any connections that can be made between the images. Consider
contexts - cultural, historical, sociological, critical, visual etc.
 Tintoretto, Last supper, 1590-94

Da Vinci, Last supper 1495 -98

The ‘theme – Last supper’ is similar in these paintings. Da Vinci’s is of renaissance period and
Tintoretto’s is of mannerism period.

The comparative study of these paintings ( some points related to the historical, visual, etc)

Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last supper Tintoretto’s Last supper

 The composition is symmetrical  It is diagonal ( has broken the concept of
 Vanishing point shown symmetrical)
 The figures are stiff, not natural  The theme is shown as a happening
 The celestial figures balances the
complete diagonal composition
Renaissance period Mannerism period
 More of religious paintings  Artists start a revolutionary step to paint
 Lots of restrictions for the artist like the the theme the way they want.
composition has to be symmetrical, etc  Sometimes this makes the painting look
unusual.

 Might there be links with influences? Evidence of the impact of previous or

contemporary art?

Evidence of impact– the artists starts creating the composition more in a natural setup, sometimes
distorts by showing the convex reflection or we can even see the elongated neck of madona.....

The application of colour is changed compared to the renaissance period.

 Are there any connections between what was happening when these different images
were created?
In the renaissance period the artist had less freedom to express their feelings as it used to be
religious based painting

Thus the mannerism artists wanted the freedom which forced them to create works out of the
boundary like asymmetry, distortion, etc

 Where to go next? Do your connections open the door to other, further directions?

Yes, two options( I feel)

1. Can start exploring only the theme ‘last supper’ till the present date...
It can be a comparative study of the concept
2. Possibilities of exploring the color scheme or brush strokes or style of the artist...

 Which artists or art movements might be explored next?
