Summary of the report of Group1

1.1 Difference between Hydrology and Hydraulics

1.2 . The Hydrological Cycle and The Human Impacts

 Hydrology - is the scientific study of the movement, distribution, and

quality of water on Earth and other planets, including the hydrologic
cycle, water resources and environmental watershed sustainability. A
practitioner of hydrology is a hydrologist, working within the fields
of earth or environmental science, physical
geography, geology or civil and environmental engineering.
 Hydraulics - is a topic in applied science and engineering dealing
with the mechanical properties of liquids or fluids
 Hydrology
o Uses only continuity equation

o Cannot model backwater effects

o Solution advanced downstream by Δx

 Hydraulics

o Use both dynamic and continuity equations

o Allows backwater effects to be modelled

o Solution advanced by timestep Δt

 Hydrological Cycle is commonly known as the Water Cycle
 Hydrological Cycle It is a sequence of conditions through which
water passes or circulates on and below the earth’s surface and
the atmosphere
 Water Cycle is the nature’s way of recycling water on earth
 Transpiration Evaporation of water from leaves of plants and its
corresponding uptake from roots in the soil
 Evaporation Process in which liquid changes to gas.
 Condensation Process by which matter changes from gas phase
into a liquid phase
 Precipitation when cloud particles become too heavy to remain
suspended in the air, they fall to the earth.
 Eutrophication is a process in which bodies of water (lakes,
ponds, and rivers) receive excess nutrients that stimulate
excessive growth of algae
 Deforestation - the removal of trees (deforestation) is having a
major impact on the water cycle, as local and global climates
change.
 Irrigation - The problem with irrigation is that it removes water
from its natural source and often causes leaching and run-
off where it is used. This removal of nutrients results in farmers
using more fertilizers to keep their pastures productive while the
waterways become polluted. Another problem is that salt is
brought up from lower levels (salination).
 This endless circulation is known as the "hydrologic cycle
