SEMI- DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10

Course: Mathematics 10
Target Learners: Grade 10- Sapphire (32 learners)
Time Element: 60 minutes

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. define circle and its parts
b. illustrate and name parts of a circle

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Circle and its Parts
Reference: Mathematics 10 Learners’ Module page 135-138, E- Math 10
page 161-165
Materials: PowerPoint presentation, visual aids (manila paper), book
Skills to be developed: Accuracy
Value Focus: Appreciation

III. LESSON PROPER

A. Preliminary Activities
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Checking of Attendance
d. Review of the past lesson
 What is a polynomial function?
 How are you going to find for the x and y intercepts?

B. Motivation
Activity: “Art Time”
 The teacher will group the students into four. (Instructions will be
flashed in the projector screen for the said activity).
Instructions:
a. Each group will be given task to draw different figures as beautiful as
they can for 5 minutes.
Group 1- A ball used in playing basketball
Group 2- A round wall clock
Group 3- A motorcycle tire
Group 4- A coin
b. The group will present and say something about their output. (The
teacher will give additional trivia about the given task).
 The teacher will ask the following questions after the activity:
1. What do you feel after doing the activity and having that kind of
output?
2. What have you noticed on the task given to you?
3. How are the figures related with each other?

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Definition of a Circle
Activity: “Know and Sketch me Right!”
a. Ask a student to draw a circle on the chalkboard.
b. Let them observe the illustration and ask them to describe a circle.
c. Reveal to them the definition of a circle and have some follow up
discussions.
 A circle is a round shaped figure that has no corners or edges. It is
also set of coplanar points that is equidistant from the given points
called the center.
Parts of a Circle
Activity: “Illustrate and Name Me”
a. Students will be group into four. Each group will be given an illustration
of a circle with the labeled letters on its parts.
b. The teacher will discuss one by one the different parts of the circle.
Parts of the circle need to be tackled:
1. Center- a point at the middle of the circle. Capital letter is used in naming
the center
2. Radius- a line segment from the center to any point on the circle
3. Diameter- a line segment that passes through the center of the circle
4. Chord- a line segment that do not pass through the center of the circle.
5. Semicircle- an arc that is half of the circle.
6. Minor Arc- an arc measuring less than a semi-circle or less than 180°.
7. Major Arc- an arc measuring greater than a semi-circle or greater than
180°.
8. Central Angle- an angle formed by two rays whose vertex is the center of
the circle.
9. Inscribed Angle- an angle formed by two rays whose vertex is on a circle
and whose sides contain chords of the circle.
10. Tangent Line- a line that intersects the circle outside at exactly one
point.
11. Secant Line- a line that intersects a circle at exactly two points. It
contains a chord.

c. After the discussion, the students will name the correct parts of the circle
from the illustration given to them. (The group to name all parts of the circle
correctly will get a prize).
D. Application
The circle and some of its parts plays significant role in our daily life
activities. Present it through jazz chants, yells, poem and essay. To be
done by group.

E. Generalization
Given the following, illustrate a circle and its parts.

Center- C, Radius- CF, Diameter- FE, Chord- IG, Central Angle-FCB,

Inscribed Angle IGH

IV. EVALUATION
