Mat Mi is a process of wrapping-to-pattern whereby parts of the yarn are tied to create a

resist pattern when dipped into the dye, before the weaving is started. After the yarn has
been dyed the Laotian women wind it onto spools and use it to weave a weft pattern into a
plain colored warp. This is called weft ikat and is a decorative technique common in the
Southern part of Laos.

There are two basic structures for Mat Mi; they are known as Mi Luat and Mi Luang. Mi Luat
is a solid ikat woven with only patterned (rather than solid colored) yarns that have been
tied to give dense lines in the finished pattern. Mi Luang, on the other hand, appears to be
arranged in dots so that the design itself looked less dense. This latter type can be made
by either tying the yarns in a pattern made up of numerous dots or it can be woven by
alternating plain yarns with Mat Mi dyed yarns to separate the solid Mat Mi pattern.

Mentions: The dyed and patterned warp is then mounted on a simple loom consisting of a breast beam
(nearest to the weaver) and a warp beam (furthest from the weaver). The loom is tensioned by means of
a strap that is attached to the breast beam and passes behind the weaver’s back. In Hainan Island and a
few areas of the Asian mainland the warp beam is braced directly by the weaver’s feet (Fig.2), however in
most other regions of SEA the warp beam is tied to a fixed point such as a tree or a couple of stakes in
the ground. The sequence of dyeing followed by weaving gives warp ikat its characteristic appearance
and soft outlines (Fig.3).

Ikat, both a noun and a verb, represents a pattern or motif that manifests through a careful and
calculated process of tying and resist dyeing. It is a word that comes from the MalayIndonesian word for
“tie,” in which the warp or weft or both are tied to resist dye. The ikat technique requires enhanced
skills in mental calculations, planning, and assiduousness to execute the imperfections to perfection.
Designers throughout the world have incorporated ikat in their collections. This textile is associated with
the cultural and handicraft traditions of various regions. With the current resurgence of sustainable
development and preservation of crafts, designers, especially in India, are promoting artisans of ikat and
other textile crafts, which are otherwise dying.
The motifs and patterns from these regions represent local stories and mores. A wide array of floral,
geometrical, and figurative patterns; a variety of fiber content, yarn type and size, weave, and
equipment used for resist dyeing processes; and regional color palettes illustrate the design potential of
the technique while celebrating local pattern traditions.

The delicate, heathery, soft edge of weft ikat from Indonesia, Japan, and Southern Saurashtra of Gujarat
is achieved using fine count yarns dyed in small sets. The contrasting bold patterns of the ikats from
Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and South Africa, usually in warp ikat, spark delight.

The Warp Ikat Technique

Woven textiles are defined as those created by interweaving flexible threads (warp and weft) at right
angles. For convenience, this is usually done with the warp threads stretched between two parallel
beams, called a loom. The defining characteristic of warp ikat is that the warp foundation of the textile is
decorated with dyed designs before weaving. This is done by attaching the warp to a frame and then
tying strips of resist material tightly around bundles of a few warp threads at a time (Fig.1). The tied
warp is then dyed and the resists are removed, leaving a design in white against a colored ground. In
some cases, several tying and dyeing steps are used in sequence to make designs with several colors.

and soft outlines (Fig.3). Aside from the basic tying and dyeing process, several aspects are shared by all
the weaving traditions considered in this study:

1. Weavers use a simple body-tensioned loom as mentioned, as opposed to the more complex frame
looms that are also present in most parts of Asia.

2. The warp is circular and continuous, and the loom is used without a reed (a device used on more
sophisticated looms to control the spacing of warp threads).

3. The ikat designs are usually interspersed with plain stripes in the warp direction, or narrow bands of
supplementary warp patterning.

4. Most textiles include bands patterned with simple ikat dashes, in addition to wider bands with more
complex motifs.
