Mathematics 8
Lesson Plan on Laws of Exponent
October 09, 2018

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Learning Competency Derive the Laws of Exponent
B. Learning Outcome Evaluate and simplify expressions.
C. Learning Objectives 1. Define and interpret the meaning of an where n is a positive integer.
(KSA) 2. Derive inductively the Laws of Exponents (restricted to positive integers) and use them
to evaluate and simplify algebraic expressions.
3. Cite and solve real-life situations that relate to Laws of Exponents.
II. CONTENT Laws of Exponents
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
A. References Grade 7 Mathematics Learner’s Material
pp. 126 - 129
B. Other Resources Elementary Algebra by Julieta G. Bernabe
IV. PROCEDURE
A. Reviewing previous Questions to be asked:
lesson or presenting the -What are similar terms?
new lesson -How do we add polynomials?
-How do we subtract polynomials?
B. Establishing a purpose “The Laws”
for the lesson
1. What are laws?
2. Do you know some of the human laws? Give some examples.
3. How about the laws made and given by our God? Give some examples.
4. Have you known some of the laws applied and used in mathematics?

C. Presenting Present an and let students define and interpret.

examples/instances of the
new lesson The teacher will also present the following:
-Product Law
-Quotient Law
-Power of a Power Law
-Zero Exponent Law
-Negative Exponent Law

Questions to be asked:
-What do you think are these laws?
-Do you know how are these laws being derived?
D. Discussing new The teacher will present the laws one by one with some examples to evaluate and the
concepts and practicing students will make a conjecture leading them to derive the laws.
new skills
Questions to be asked:
-What have you observed with the exponents?
-What can you conclude about the expression?
-What does the law mean?
F. Developing mastery The students will do a group activity which is to decode a biblical passage (“Now
(Leads to Formative therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.” Genesis 28:7).
Assessment) Each in every group will be assigned with a number. The number randomly called will be
the one to answer.

Directions: Each learner will evaluate or simplify an algebraic expression using the
different laws of exponents. Write the word that corresponds to your answer on the board
(in order) to decode a message for everyone.

G. Finding practical Values: What would happen if we continually commit mistakes without making any effort
applications of concepts to correct them?

Real problem: Chain message. It’s “Tell your sister you love her” Day! Tell all your girls
you love them like sisters! So send 5 friends this message if you really love them.

Questions to be asked:
-What algebraic expression would represent the number of messages if the chain goes n
times?
-How many messages will there be if the chain stops at 4 times?
H. Making generalizations Questions to be asked:
and abstractions about the -What are the different Laws of Exponents?
lesson -What does each law state?
-Why do we need to follow the laws of exponents in solving problems involving
exponents?
-What situations in life relate to following the laws?
-What real-life situations relate to laws of exponents?
I. Evaluating learning Quiz:

Using the different laws of exponents, evaluate/simplify the following algebraic

expressions.

A. Evaluate.
1. (-6)2
2. -62
27
3. 20
4. (200)6
5. (3-2)(35)

B. Simplify the following algebraic expressions.

1. (a3)-2
2. (x7)(x-3)
𝑦8
3.
𝑦4
4. x0 –xy0 + y0
1
5. 𝑏−3

C. Solve the problem.

Each of 7 persons owns 7 cats, each cat eats 7 mice, each mouse eats 7 ears of corn. How
many ears of corn are eaten? If each of 6 persons owns 6 cats and so on, how many fewer
ears of corn are eaten?
