In addition to part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the Time table) this portion gives further
specific details regarding the course.
Course No : CHE F 312
Course Title : Chemical Engineering Laboratory -1
Instructor-in-Charge : Krishna Etika
Practical Instructors : Amit Jain, Srinivas Appari, Pradipta Chattopadyay
1. Course Description:
The course comprises of experiments in three major areas of chemical engineering, i.e., fluid mechanics,
heat transfer and mass transfer. The course involves experiments designed to cover the areas related to the
theory of
1. Fluid flow: flow through packed and fluidized beds, major and minor losses associated with fluid
flow, flow characteristics, continuity principle, boundary layer theory and fluid moving machinery,
2. Heat transfer: conduction, convection, radiation and heat exchange equipments such as heat
exchangers (shell and tube, double pipe, plate type, finned tube) and condensers.
3. Mass transfer: Vapor liquid equilibrium (VLE), separation based on volatility, mass transfer
equipments such as distillation column, packed bed adsorber, and mass transfer with reaction and
other relevant concepts.
The main objective of this course is to familiarize the students on different principles of chemical
engineering through hands on experimentation. The experiments are designed to enable students to apply the
theoretical background assimilated in the relevant chemical engineering courses to practice in a laboratory
environment. Emphasis is laid on employing scientific methodology in practice: each experiment requires
planning, data collection, calculations based on chemical engineering principles, critical analysis, discussion
and presentation of the observed result. Additionally, the students will also learn the operation of laboratory
scale scientific equipments for performing experiments.
3. Text Books:
o Lab Manual for Chemical Engineering Laboratory - I.
4. Reference Books:
o Instrument manuals provided by the vendors
5. Course Plan:
The students will perform the following twenty experiments with an emphasis on individual planning and
execution of the experiments.
