1.4 Adhesive Materials 1.4 Adhesive Materials Cont..
• Thermoplastic base adhesive materials • Thermosets base adhesive materials
– these materials melts or softens on heating and – these are adhesive materials having cross-linked
hardens on cooling without undergoing chemical molecules of strong covalent intermolecular bonds
change e.g. Cyanoacrylates e.g. Epoxy resins.
 Characteristics  Characteristics

o short curing period o cannot be sufficiently softened, re-melted and recycled

o do not undergo a physical or chemical change upon the o provide higher bond strengths
application of heat o long curing period
o good resistance to oils but poor resistance to water

1.4 Adhesive Materials Cont.. 1.5 Additives
• Elastomeric adhesive materials Additives are substance added to adhesives
These adhesives arise from natural or synthetic to enhance qualities and properties.
elastomers which require longer curing period e.g. • Colorants (dye or pigments)
Silicone, natural rubber etc. – added for aesthetic purposes
 Characteristics • Plasticizers (polyvinylchloride (PVC))
o superior toughness and elongation
– added to increase flexibility, and strength
o Bond strengths are relatively low with excellent flexibility
• Filler (mica, alumina, silica, etc.)

– added to improve specific performance
