Go to the know yourself section and take ALL the self-assessment quizzes. It is
important to do all the quizzes to get a full picture of your interests and a more accurate
assessment of your interests.

1. Education required and or recommendations: accountant examination to prove that you


are skilled enough to do the job, also some background experience in business is good
to have

2. Suggested Post-Secondary Institutions: University of Toronto, UBC

3. Cost of training in Canadian $ (full program cost for all years): the cost to do this corse
is pretty flexible, UBC has a 41 week course and to get into it all you need is a 4 year
undergraduate degree and the course is $750

4. Salary range: the salary range can be anywhere from 39k – 90k with the median being
around 60k

5. Job description: Prepares asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and
analyzing account information

can be difficult; especially when it comes to their money, long working hours with tight
deadlines

11. Describe how your values, skills and interests relate to this career option: I enjoy
working independently and I am good with numbers, business intrigues me which is
important also

12. What courses and grades are needed to enter this occupation? Universities are always
looking for the best grade so to get into the UBC I would the least you would need is
straight A’s

13. Working conditions: long hours in an office, talk with clients whenever they come in

14. Typical hours of work: 40 hours a week, it’s an individual business so when you want to
work is up to you but you got to fit around 40 hours in there somewhere

15. Describe what has influenced your choice of this occupation: it came up in the
recommended occupations on the career insite page and I thought it would be
interesting to do this, also my grandfather used to be an accountant so i wanted to see
what he did for a living

16. What are the future trends of this occupation: the percentage of job openings is going
down slowly but there is still plenty of need for accountants in the upcoming decade

18. Education required and or recommendations: to become one, you need a bachelor’s
degree in software engineering, computer engineering, or a related science

19. Suggested Post-Secondary Institutions: McMaster university, Simon Fraser university

20. Cost of training in Canadian $ (full program cost for all years): tuition is $14,124, so for 4
years it would be about $56,000

21. Salary range: $48,750-153,000

22. Job description: software developers design, research, and maintain software
applications, technical environments, operating systems, embedded software, and
telecommunication services.

24. Employment prospects: prospects are good, there is a forecasted employment rate
growth for the next ten years, with an expected 4,700 openings in the next 10 years

cause damage to your eyes or your back if you aren’t sitting correctly.

28. Describe how your values, skills and interests relate to this career option: I enjoy
problem solving and logic based problems so coding would come easy to me. I also took
IT in gr.8 and enjoyed it quite a lot so I think working with computers is something that I
would enjoy.

29. What courses and grades are needed to enter this occupation? Computer and math
related courses. It’s a difficult job so you would need all A’s

30. Working conditions: in an office or at home, in front of a computer

31. Typical hours of work: 40 hours a week, but 17% of programmers work 50 hours, often
working in the evenings or on weekends to meet deadlines

32. Describe what has influenced your choice of this occupation: saw this career in the
recommended section after completing the surveys on career insite, I picked because I
typically enjoy working with computers and think it would be a good option for me

33. What are the future trends of this occupation: employment rate is expected to grow in
the upcoming years, which is good if I wanted to be a programmer because the industry
will be bigger for the time that I finish university

1. ergonomics are very important because you are going to be sitting for very long
periods of time

2. the industry is growing quite quickly with the rise of technology and there aren’t too
many people graduating from software engineering programs so there is a surplus of jobs
available.

businesses, offices, homes. Could be anywhere, long commutes may be required

picked, there was no reason behind it, im not interested in any trades so I didn’t have
any preferance

occupation and all the new openings are due to retiring workers
