INTRODUCTION TO PISTON

The piston is a vital component of a cylindrical engine. It

reciprocates inside the cylinder bore. The piston acts as a
moveable end of the combustion chamber. The cylinder head is
the stationary end of the combustion chamber. 0 piston head is the
top surface (closest to the cylinder head) of the piston which is
subjected to pressure fluctuation, thermal stresses and mechanical
load during normal engine operation. By the forces of combustion,
piston reciprocates inside the cylinder bore.
Objectives of the project are as follows

1. To develop structural modeling of piston

2. To develop structural analysis of the piston

Major Force Acting Over Piston

1. Due to explosion of fuel gases
2. Due to compression of fuel gases
3. Side wall friction and forces
4. Thermal load
5. Inertia force due to high frequency of reciprocation of piston
6. Friction and forces at crank pin hole

Functions Of Piston

7. To reciprocate in the cylinder as a gas tight plug causing

suction, Compression , expansion, and exhaust strokes.

8. To receive the thrust generated by the explosion of the gas in

the cylinder And transmit it to the connecting rod.

3.To form a guide and bearing to the small end of the connecting
rod and to take the side thrust due to obliquity of the rod.
How to drawing a piston slender devise:

1-first drawing this object

a=101m,b=26m,c=14m,d=73m,

2-dimention of pison
3-drwing the shift q=110m,and then drawing the three cicely in this
dimension R1=56m,R2=8,R3=9.5..

3-and then go to the parametric and used this icon concentric:

Piston top end thickness 4.81mm
Piston open end thickness 2.053mm
Conclusion:

This chapter elucidated the importance of piston in automotive

system with its terminology. The detailed explanation is given in the
history of piston with keen concentration on type of piston materials
and the selection of suitable piston materials. Apart from this, the
methodology behind the fabrication process of piston by die casting
method with a flow chart is explained in detail. The need for such
bimetallic piston is revealed.
