For years furniture has been the object of decoration, comfort and furnishing without any
hesitation but recent concerns have been raised about hazardous AZO (azote) dyes in clothing
and bed linen which now include textiles and leather. The Australian Furniture Association
(AFA) has invited the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to study the
possible threats caused by AZO dyes in clothing and bed linen to users. The ACCC will also study
the potential exposure to chemicals such as formaldehyde from bonded leather in imported
furniture.
It has been noted that the risk of exposure increases with body heat, sweat or saliva. In all cases
identified by the ACCC the articles were imported from other countries.
Many consumer goods are dyed with highly effective AZO dyes. A small proportion of AZO dyes
contain, or can break down to form, a class of chemical substances referred to as aromatic amines
(including benzidine) which are hazardous to human health.
The imported furniture that might pose health risks include sofas, lounge suites, chairs and office/
desk chairs, ottomans, day beds, bedheads/side foot rails, foot-ends, blanket boxes/footlockers, tall
boys/chests of drawers, bedside tables, lowboys, and lingerie chests.
ACCC reports AZO dyes are a large class of very effective synthetic dyes used for colouring a variety of

Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu not only complete each other in their personal lives
but also make the better halves in the design industry. Recently they made the
headlines when this designer couple was invited to design the most prestigious Das
Haus 2015. After the unique interpretation by the Danish designer Louise Campbell,
characterised by a romantic purism, the Shanghai-based architects Neri&Hu is given
the responsibility to write the next chapter and lend a completely new and exciting
perspective to the design format of “Das Haus – Interiors on Stage”.
They are the most distinguished designer pair in China to have received many
accolades and recognition from worldwide and worked with many prestigious
brands in Europe such as MOOI, LEMA, Parachilna, Classicon, Gandia Blasco, Stellar
Works, Meritalia and BD Barcelona Design, the latter two were in collaboration
with Swarovski’s “SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS at Work” project. In 2014, UK Wallpaper
have announced Mr. Neri and his partner Rossana Hu as 2014 Designer of The
Year. In 2013, Mr. Neri was inducted into U.S. Interior Design Hall of Fame with
partner Rossana Hu. They also published and edited a book called ‘Persistence
of Vision’. The book is a beginning of a series of exploration on architecture
and urban issues in major cities in China.
Lyndon Neri is also a founder of Design Republic, a retail concept store based in
Shanghai. The flagship store design, created by Neri&Hu, earned the Perspective
Awards Best Interior Retail and the DFA (Design for Asia) Best Design of Greater
China.
FAE: Your designs reflect a new modern Chinese aesthetic. What are the
sources of your inspiration?
Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu: We are very much inspired by the everyday,
the mundane and the ordinary. The very fabric of Shanghai as a city and the
everyday activities in and around the city is very much an inspiration. The
western architectural tradition form the basis of our education, but culturally
we are very much Chinese, and there are Influences particularly in our work
that’s located in China. We also like to examine local culture of our project so it
depends on the location of the project.
FAE: How and when did you plan to collaborate together for Neri&Hu?
Neri & Hu: We started our practice Neri&Hu in 2004. A lot of people suggested that we should have
an office of our own, but we were committed personally to our projects at MGA and had a real close
bond with Michael personally. Rossana first took off to have her first child. When I had to resign, it
was difficult emotionally for me, because I had put over 10 years of my life. Still, all designers will
one day take on their own wings, and it just was time to move on and start designing our own work.
Neri & Hu: It's convenient that we are married and live together… :) and also, we
have different strength, and make up for each other's weaknesses.
FAE: How has been your journey from a beginner to now one
of the well known brand in the world of design?
Neri & Hu: Always fascinated by wood, for the sense of life it can
provide in a space, both in its visual quality and its tactility. We are
also exploring plants, living beings, as something to use for both
interior and exterior building material.
Neri & Hu: Research is the key. Trying to get the essence is the most important
and not to keep everything for the sake of keeping. When a building is being
reused, most of the time the typology changes so we have to take this in
consideration. We have to bring life into a building, and think of a way to
transform it to give it freshness and new purpose. Just fixing things to make
them exactly as they were is one way of looking at historical refurbishment,
but we like to try to inject a sense of modernity and
contemporary breath. To us, to present history within a
contemporary context makes a historic project successful,
as it allows the building to live in the presence of today.
FAE: How do you fuse both the consumer demand and your
style statement?
Neri & Hu: When you are passionate with what you do, a client can tell
and often it is not that difficult to persuade them even if they have strong
personalities or have other ideas. It is also important to listen to what the
needs and aspiration of the clients are. Strong communication is
imperative from the start. Yes we need to spend a lot of time to
educate and share with the client our thoughts and reasons for
doing things. Sometimes it is hard, but at the same time they may
be more open to new ideas since they don't come with strong
preconceptions.
