Task 2
Design Led Study: Bridge Street Inverness
This is regarded as a mainstay project of the module and this task will be working as one single group
on this project. The task is to meet with your client at the outset agree parameters for the extension
design and produce an extension.

You will require to develop a workflow and strategy to develop this design led task to concept stage
and formal presentation of ideas to external clients at Christmas.

You will need to agree the workflow packages and undertake the work to agreed internal and external
timelines. These workflow packages are as follows;

What do we have to work with?

 Site Analysis
 Massing Study

What can we develop on this site?

 Options Charrette Organising & Host

How can we articulate these ideas?

 Physical Model
 Digital Model

How can we generate support for these ideas?

 Public Presentation of Models and ideas.

Client Brief

Civil Leaders of Highland Council have reacted to the negative press surrounding the Bridge Street
complex in Inverness and have purchased the site from private owners.
Author Bill Bryson famously described the complex as "two sensationally ugly modern office buildings
that blot the town centre beyond any hope of redemption" in his book, "Notes from a Small Island".
Highland Council have for your team’s architectural assistance to seek development options for this
site.

The site is elongated from Castle Road to the West to Castle Wynd to the East on the North by Bridge
Street and south by the ramparts/walls of the Castle.

The site occupies a prominent location on Castle Wynd directly below Inverness Castle. It enjoys
outstanding views across the River Ness towards the Cathedral and the hills beyond the city. Castle
Wynd is easily accessible and benefits from access to all city centre amenities including bus and rail
stations, the Eastgate Shopping Centre and the Rose Street Multi-Storey car park. For that reason the
site has been identified for public uses and civic arts centre.

The current buildings on site consist of IMAG art centre (Inverness Museum & Art Gallery), Tourist
Information, The Keep dental practice and vacant office accommodation on the prominent rectilinear
forms that encompass 4 & 6 Castle Wynd. The site is such that shops exist at street level and the
hitherto sit above these shops creating a hidden streetscape.

Task 2

All the shops, offices and restaurants are to be re-located and all current building forms are to be
demolished under a separate contract and the site is to be left vacant for development.

Suggested Uses

 Arts Venue Museum

 Shopping Arcade (External & Subterranean) Library
 Assembly Hall Fine Dining Quarter
 Music Quarter Public Realm Square

The client wishes for you to arrange a Charrette to develop options for the site and to host this and
following this Charrette produce a physical and digital model that can allow the public to observe
potential options and offer opinions. These models would be presented publically.

The client timeline is as follows;

Monday 22 October 2018 Client will meet with you to discuss project.
Monday 19 November 2018 Hosting of Charrette with Client & Externals
Monday 11 December 2018 Public Presentation of Physical & Digital Models

Production Information

Monday 19 November 2018 WEEK 10 Task 2 - Options Charrette

Produce enough visual information in the form of site analysis and massing information and drawing
production to host a Charrette for external stakeholders. This information for the client will be in a
recognised format, scale and clearly demonstrates your analysis and massing process and your
delivery of the Charrette session will inform the design process further. You are to also enter into
informative dialogue with the client that will clearly demonstrate your thinking for future options.

Monday 11 December 2018 WEEK 14 Task 2 - Submission of Physical & Digital Model and Public Presentation

Following the Charrette you will develop the most popular idea’s and develop a 3D (Digital or Physical
model with supporting 2D graphics which will present this information to the client in an informative
visual manner. This will allow dialogue with the client that will clearly demonstrate the outcomes of
the Charrette and inform the design process further and your team design advice.
