Parent Involvement:
The school/parent relationship has been positive with continuous collaboration for all students through meetings, conferences and
school programs. The Friends of Conrad (formerly PTA), encourage parental involvement through volunteer services for all
academic and social programs such as school dances, family fun night, awards assemblies and field trips. Communication with the
parents is enhanced through newsletters published every month by the school level Parent Involvement Committee. These
publications are an excellent source of information for members of the school community concerning current and future school
events. The school collaborates with other agencies such as the YMCA and Crossroads to bring workshops and training to parents
of our students.
Progress Toward Implementing State Content Standards:
Conrad Middle School's teaching staff has implemented the State Content Standards in core academic and exploratory courses. Our
instructional focus has as its foundation in the State and District curriculums. All teachers are required to teach all students the
content standards based on each student's readiness level.

Programs
Exemplary Programs
Our programs enrich the lives of our students beyond the traditional classroom setting. Our four computer labs are enjoyed by students on a daily
basics. Our Business Education programs provide students with keyboarding opportunities, word processing capability, and internet instruction to
supplement research in the library, while our Technology Education program enables students to solve problems using technology. Through a large
grant and additional monies from the district we established an after school program to assist students in mathematics and language arts. Part of the
after school program permits students to receive assitance for homework, DSTP prep and counseling in peer relationships, and family issues.

LAPTOP EXPERIENCE
Over 360 6th, 7th & 8th graders are receiving their core academic instruction using wireless laptops. The use of technology provides students with a
unique opportunity to learn different technological skills as they master the essential skills in reading, mathematics, science and social studies.
Additionally, our laptop program addresses the issue of the digital divide by providing technological opportunities for students who wouldn't
necessarily be exposed to them due to economic reasons. Moreover, students learn skills today that are essential for successful employment in the
future.
CASA (Conrad After School Achievers)
Five days a week over 85 students were involved with Conrad teachers working to improve their achievement in mathematics, language arts,
science and social studies. Many students attended more than one session a week depending on their individual needs. Most of the students showed
a definite improvement in their grades along with improved attendance, classroom behavior and self esteem. This program is funded with grant
monies which provided students with a meal during the program hours and a counseling component.

Banking Time Program For Professional Development

Conrad has extended it's regular school day for the purpose of "banking time". The "banked" time allows teachers to participate in professional
development activities for one half-day per month over and above the district's professional development days. Training received correlates with
the needs identified on the school's instructional profile and with the School Improvement Plan. Topics presented have given teachers more in-
depth training on Differentiated Instruction, Higher Order Questioning techniques and technology integration.

INTRAMURAL/ INTERSCHOLASTIC SPORTS

Conrad Middle School's intramural sports program offers a variety of sports to all students. The flag football season is played in the fall with
basketball following in the winter, and floor hockey in the spring. All players take pride in being a member of these teams as they compete against
fellow classmates throughout the season. We also offer the interscholastic sports of soccer, girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and track.
Members of the teams compete with other middle schools within the district. The Conrad student athletes are always competitive in interscholastic
sports.

The goal of the school climate and discipline program is to promote necessary components of a healthy school climate; to support learning and
contribute to students’ health by minimizing distractions; physical, psychological, and social hazards; creating a climate in which students and
school staff do their best work; expecting that all students can succeed; and implementing supporting policies. This goal is accomplished by
having in place collaborative relationships, an effective evaluation process, technical assistance and resources to ensure that schools are
designed to provide a safe, healthy, and supportive environment that fosters learning.

Teacher Qualifications
States will be required under NCLB to report the percentage of classes taught by highly qualified
teachers beginning with the 2005-2006 school year. The reporting is done on a class basis, e.g., the
number/percent of mathematics classes taught by highly qualified teachers. The reason is that a
teacher may teach more than one class and in more than one NCLB Content Area. Thus, to assure
that every student has a highly qualified teacher, the data collection and reporting must be done on a
class basis. Elementary teachers are viewed as generalists and are considered as teaching one class.

The term “NCLB Content Areas” means classes that contain instruction in English, reading or
language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts,
history, and geography [Section 9101(11)].

2006 Delaware School Accountability System
Delaware's Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) Accountability system, which determines ratings for schools, is based on the performance of
students taught in each school rather than just tested in the school. A student's Delaware Student Testing Program (DSTP) results are
assigned to the school(s) that the student attended.

Annual measurable target percentages have been established in Delaware for both reading/language arts and mathematics. Specific
categories of students (all,race/ethnicity,low-income,limited English proficient and children with disabilities) must meet these annual
percentages each year or show a decrease of at least 10% in the number of students not meeting Standards in order for a school to
successfully meeting Adequate Yearly Progress or AYP requirements. Schools must also meet State Progress Targets consisting of scaled
composite scores representing the percentage of students in each of five performance levels for reading, math, science and social studies
tests. A school will receive an ovrall rating determined by a combination of AYP and State Progress ratings. There must be at least 40
students in any category before that category is utilized in measuring a school's progress towards meeting target goals. Data is reported if
there are at least 15 students in a subgroup.

Ninety-five percent of all students (higher of current year or two-year average) must participate in the DSTP assessments in order for a
school to make adequate yearly progress. The school must also maintain progress from the previous year for other academic indicators.
For high schools, it is the graduation rate. For elementary and middle schools, it is progress shown in the "All" students cell for average
scale scores for reading and math combined for students scoring below the standard compared to the previous year.
