LANGUAGE FEST 2019


October 10 – 11, 2019
Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion, Arnaldo Blvd., Roxas City

Theme: “CAPRISA 2019: Beloved. Gifted. Empowered.”

GENERAL RULES:
1. The competitions are open to all students from private elementary and secondary schools that are
members of the CAPRISA.
2. A student can join only two (2) categories given that there will be no conflict in time and date of the
event.
3. The student that was declared as Champion in the previous year can no longer compete in the same
category. The student will be given the chance to join in other categories.
4. Any person who serves as a trainer for a contestant in the Language Fest is strictly not allowed to
be chosen as judge in any category.
5. In all events, ranking system shall be used to determine the winners. In case of a tie, modal
system shall be used. After the modal system has been adopted and the tie is unbreakable, the
Board of Judges shall declare the winner.
6. The decision of the Board of Judges will be final and unappealable, except when the official
Education Coordinator of the school has filed a written complaint noted by the school head.

GROUND RULES:
1. The audience is requested to turn off or set their phones and other gadgets in silent mode.
2. Applause in between delivery is highly discouraged. Audience may clap their hands before or after
the delivery of each contestant.
3. Trainers, coaches, and coordinators should stay at the designated areas provided. Non-participants
are strictly off-limits.
4. Only the official Education Coordinator of the competing school is allowed to be with the contestant
backstage. No make-up artists or production assistants shall be allowed to enter the area.
5. Only the designated technical committee member is allowed to fix/arrange/change the
microphone, microphone stand, and other audio devices before the contest proper.

SPELLING
1. DepEd officials will prepare the list of words to be used for the contest.
2. For reference, Merriam-Webster Dictionary (Old and New Edition) will be used.
3. Contestants shall bring their own marking pens and thirty (30) pieces lengthwise long bond paper.
4. Mechanics:
4.1 All contestants will spell the same set of words in writing. Before the word is read by the
pronouncer, the contestants will raise their marking pens.
4.2 The word will be read twice. After the first reading, the pronouncer will give the meaning of
the word and use it in a sentence. Then, he/she will read the word again. After the second
reading, the pronouncer will say “Go” and the ten-second time limit will automatically begin.
4.3 After ten seconds, the bell will ring. The contestants should immediately stop writing and
raise their papers to show their answers to the judges.
4.4 The judges will declare the correct answer.
4.5 Point system shall be used. Scores will be reflected in the tally board.
4.6 There will be four (4) rounds: Easy (1 point each correct answer), Average (2 points each
correct answer), Difficult (3 points each correct answer), and Clincher (5 points each correct
answer). The Clincher round will only take place in case of a tie.

4.7 Five (5) words will be spelled for the Easy, Average, and Difficult rounds. In the Clincher
round, there will be as many words as needed to break the tie.
4.8 The contestant who will get the highest points will be declared the winner.
5. American pronunciation will be used but both American and British spelling will be accepted.
6. Only the official Education Coordinator of the competing school can file protest immediately after
the declaration of the correct spelling by the judges. The protest will only be entertained before
another word is read.

ON-THE-SPOT POEM WRITING


1. The topic will be announced three (3) minutes before the one-hour time limit starts.
2. The poem can be free-verse style.
3. The participant should provide a title for his/her work.

Criteria:
Adherence to the Elements of Poetry (Imagery, Symbolism, Structure) 50%
Content/Message 30%
Originality 20%

ON-THE-SPOT ESSAY WRITING


1. The topic will be announced three (3) minutes before the one-hour time limit starts.
2. The essay must be written in English and must not be less than two hundred (200) words.
3. The participant should provide a title for his/her work.

Criteria:
Content/Message and Originality 50%
Command of Language 50%

NEWS WRITING, FEATURE WRITING, AND EDITORIAL WRITING


1. The topic shall be announced one (1) hour before the contests start. A time limit of one (1) hour for
writing is strictly imposed.
2. The write-ups must be written and must not be less than three hundred (300) words for Feature
and Editorial Writing and ninety (90) words for News Writing.
3. The participant should provide a title for Feature and Editorial Writing and a headline for News
Writing.

Adherence to Journalistic Writing 30%

ENGLISH AND FILIPINO DECLAMATION


1. Contest pieces must be on any topic suited for declamation. It can be in poetry or in prose.
2. Three (3) stand microphones shall be used.
3. Props are strictly not allowed.
4. The delivery must not exceed six (6) minutes. The timer will ring the bell once thirty (30) seconds
before the time ends and twice at the end of six (6) minutes. One (1) point will be deducted from
the total score of each judge within each thirty (30) seconds exceeded.

5. Interpretation of the piece must focus on the eye and facial expressions. No other parts of the body
shall touch the floor except the feet.
6. Declamation pieces which portray vulgarity and violence such as rape, terrorism, murder, sexual
harassment, incestuous relationship, and other immoral and criminal acts are strictly not allowed.

STORYTELLING (Individual – Elementary Level only)


1. Stories presented can be authentic, adapted, or originally written.
2. Stories must be thematically educational. It should focus on positive values and must not touch on
issues such as violence, murder, perversion, abortion, or rape.
3. Storytellers may have minimal gestures but must focus on facial expressions.
4. Storytellers have the option to sit down or stand during their performance. Contestants are only
allowed to use the lapel microphone.
5. Attire must be decent and may depict the character in the story. Props, backdrops, and sound
effects are not allowed.
6. Material should be read and must not exceed five (5) minutes. The timer will ring the bell once
thirty (30) seconds before the time ends and twice at the end of five (5) minutes. One point will be
deducted from the total score of each judge within each thirty (30) seconds exceeded.

CHARACTER IMPERSONATION
1. Characters must be taken from children’s literature like fairy tales, fables, or Biblical stories and
Greek Mythology. Impersonation of political figures is discouraged.
2. Contestants may provide background music which should be at the beginning or ending and only
for a maximum of one (1) minute.
3. Props are allowed provided it does not detach from the contestant.
4. The delivery shall not exceed six (6) minutes. The timer will ring the bell once thirty (30) seconds
before the time ends and twice at the end of six (6) minutes. One point will be deducted from the
total score of each judge within each thirty (30) seconds exceeded.

REQUIREMENTS:
1. 2x2 recent photo with name tag (Surname, First Name, Middle Initial) for the Photo Gallery
2. Certificate of Enrollment from the Registrar noted by the Principal
3. Three (3) copies of the contest piece (Title and category only; No names or
contestant/author/coach)

Note:
1. Requirements must be placed in a yellow folder for the elementary level and blue folder for the
secondary level.
2. Contest pieces must be placed inside a brown envelope taped and signed over for security
purposes.

Deadline for Submission of Requirements and Payment for Registration (P300.00 for every category):
September 27, 2019 (Friday), 4:00 PM at CPC – Main Conference Hall.
