For Quants get either of the two book – Quantitative Aptitude by Arun Sharma or 60,023 Views
Nishit K. Sinha – Quantitative Aptitude. QA by Arun Sharma has sums bifurcated into Last Asked Jan 25
three level namely LOD – I, LOD – II and LOD – III where LOD stands for Level of Edits
Difficulty. What you need is to master LOD – I and LOD – II types of sums. Don’t
waste your significant time on LOD – III.

There are two approaches depending upon level of comfortability with handling of
quants.

· If you are good at QA: - Try to solve all LOD’s together after completing each chapter.

· If you are average at QA: - Than the approach could be try to solve only LOD – I and
LOD – II after completing each chapter. Once, you have solved all LOD – I and II.
Comeback again and now solve all three LOD.

· If you are very weak at QA: - Than solve only LOD – I first, than LOD – I and II again.
Once again LOD – I and LOD – II. Don’t touch even a single sum of LOD – III.

N.K. Sinha’s QA sums are divided into four category - warm-up, foundation, moderate
and advance. These are on same line as A.S. in following form:

Warm-up and Foundation = LOD – I

Moderate = LOD – II

Advance = LOD –III

You can follow the above techniques, of AS on same line for NS also. Now which book
to buy depends upon your comfortability of handling Q.A. AS books are more
traditional, the same sum has been continued for more than 6-7 year. It hasn’t been
adaptive whereas NS books are adaptive and sum included reflects the latest trend in
terms of level of difficulty. However, by no mean it deteriorates AS books, because
although AS book are traditional but they are robust.

I always believe VARC is hardest section to improve among all. First thing I would do
is read The Hindu English newspaper daily. It does not provide any immediate
tangible benefit, but it goes long way in developing a quick reading habit. Don’t just
read, understand and try to develop a central idea about every topic you read in the
newspaper. This will cultivate habit of understanding the essence and developing the
central theme. If you are able to master this art. RC’s would be cake walk for you.

I would not suggest any book to practice and I believe hand ka funda material is
enough. Another, very useful resource is Career Launcher’s Smart Cat Cracker
Programme. But do not buy entire package, only Verbal Ability and Reading
Comprehension package is to be bought. Why I say this because Gejo Sir is genius in
mastering the art of solving RC.

3. Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation:

Buy Arun Sharma’s LR and DI book. They are more than good enough. Practice them
after doing your lessons from handa ka funda. With respect to DI don’t miss AS part
named “Challenges in DI” because this are DI question which are logical reasoning
oriented and off –lately, CAT’s DI question are logical oriented.

The above is learning part which should be done by the end of June.

Testing and Revision Part:

For this, I would suggest you to enroll CL’s comprehensive test package which
includes following:

a. Test Gym Lite: It comprises of 5,012 question. According to me it is one of the best
source of practice. The following table depicts break-up of 5,012 question along with
maximum time estimate you need to complete it. Overall, you need 232 hours on
maximum side.

7/20/2017 How should I start preparing for the CAT exam 2017 to get into IIMs with 99 percentile? - Quora

b. Test Gym Classic: It comprises of 15 sectional test for each section in form of
sectional test. Further, it comprises 08 full mock test which can also be taken as
individual 08 sectional test for each of section. Thus, in totality there will be 23 each
sectional test. Thus in total you have 69 sectional test.

c. Mock-test: There are 30 mock test.

The reason why I am stating in details about CL’s resource is because it is best to focus
only on one resource completely and only if you feel you can complete it go for
another test series.

For each of the above resource of testing, make an extensive use of excel. In
determining which is your strength and weakness. Maintain data sheet and identify
which questions you are able to attempt and which of it will take time. By such data
analysis, the advantage is whatever conclusion you will determine it will be objective
and not subjective.

By the end of October you should be very clear with which questions to attempt and
which to leave. Because, CAT is all about identifying the questions to be left and
scoring on your strength.

All the best !

This is one of those giant generalist questions whose answer inevitably contains a
bunch of links giving the outlines.

To begin with, know what the exam contains and what is the syllabus for it. Then
plan your preparation with a broad schedule. Now, let us move to the more salient
points

Prepare from basics, prepare with fun

Do not get sucked into this business of learning shortcuts. You would have heard of
that old adage “there is no shortcut to success”; that is very true for CAT. Dont listen
to anyone who says you need to know some gazillion shortcuts to crack CAT. Chances
are that whoever said this to you has some useless shortcuts to sell. I have cracked this
exam multiple times and I know zero shortcuts. And yeah, you do not need Vedic
Math either .

This CAT prep is more marathon than sprint, so retain the joie-de-vivre. Otherwise
preparation-fatigue will get you sooner or later.

Read away to glory

Read for 1 hour a day if you want to take CAT seriously. The singlemost important
factor for cracking CAT is reading comfort. This takes months to build. So, start
reading today, and continue reading till you are 80. If you want to read novels, you
could do worse than to go through this list ; if websites and blogs are your thing,

Do the drill diligently

An important component in cracking any competitive exam is building automaticity -

the ability to do some processes without really breaking sweat. Imagine how tough it
was to learn to ride a bike or drive a car. Now imagine how effortless it is once you
have internalized the standard maneuvers. Solving questions for CAT should be like
that.

After this, you will need to cover DI-LR, know all different question-types and plan a
mock CAT schedule. But all that come later.

If you want to learn a few topics to get a feel for CAT preparation, register as a free
user at 2IIM Online CAT Coaching and CAT Preparation: Crack CAT 2017 and give it
a go. About 25 hours worth preparation can be done without paying a dime and it
should give you a clear outline on what CAT entails.

Hope this is useful. Best wishes for CAT preparation.

Before you start preparing, take a mock test. Note down your strengths and
weaknesses. Even with zero prep you will find that you are good at some topics and
not that comfortable with other topics. For example, you may find that you are able to
solve most questions in arithmetic but you find reading comprehension to be very
difficult. Taking a mock test will also give you an idea about the different sections in
CAT.

Now, make a section-wise plan of preparation accounting for the time you have per
week, materials you are going to use etc. You should try to finish the learning part of
the preparation by the end of June, so that you can start taking lot of mocks by July. I

have given a broad framework for preparation you can follow for each section: (if you
would prefer to watch a video on this then you can click here )

QUANT:

1) Make a list of topics under quant. Start with a broad classification, like: Number
Systems, Geometry, Arithmetic and then list out the sub-topics under each heading.
You can find the complete list of sub-topics in the video link given above.

2) Start with any topic you want to. Spend a lot of time getting the basics right, solve
all concept level questions and then move to application based questions.

3) Once you finish practicing easy questions from the topic, start practicing CAT level
questions. You will find an excellent set of questions to solve here .

DILR:

There is no well-defined strategy for this section except practicing as many sums (of
different types) as possible. Start by understanding different types of charts and
graphs (Pie Charts, Bar Graphs, Histogram etc.) and various types of puzzles (seating
arrangement, Einstein Puzzle, etc.), though CAT will still ask some unconventional
type of puzzle, it is a good idea to know about these standard types.

Additionally you can read publications like Mint, Economics, etc. that have a column
on Charts and Graphs. You can also get George Summers’ book of puzzles for
additional practice.

Most coaching institutes’ mock tests have an excellent collection of DILR questions.

VERBAL:

Reading ability matters the most in this section. Read as much as possible (from
different sources) in these months leading up to the CAT exam. Here is a detailed
post that explains how to prepare for the verbal section (I am not including the post
here to keep the answer short). Additionally you can find a list of good blogs and
publications to follow here .

7/20/2017 How should I start preparing for the CAT exam 2017 to get into IIMs with 99 percentile? - Quora

Note: Remember not to get carried away by preparing for just one section. A lot of
people focus too much on one section and forget the rest only to end up not clearing
the sectional cut offs. Last year I neglected the DILR section and never really
practiced enough questions while constantly worrying about quants. The result was
that my low DILR percentile dragged my overall percentile down even though I had
close to 99 percentile in other 2 sections.

Best wishes for CAT 2017!

THANKS for A2A

Common admission test can be cleared by having good aptitude, English. If you dont
have, you can learn, practice and get a good CAT Score. The first thing you need to do
is have a unshakable belief that you can ace the CAT because you will see lots of ups
and downs in these few months so it’s really important to not to loose focus

Do not stress yourself too much with the preparation. Do not imprison yourself
with the preparation plan alone. Spend time doing your favorite activities too.Hard
Work is the key to success!Stick with this strategy throughout your preparations and
success will follow you. Believe in your strategy and more importantly in yourself.

Next you need is a strategy or a game plan for next few months. No one can tell you
whats the best way to prepare for for you but there are some basic guidelines which
will help you find your way.

Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation: Practice is the key here. There are
hardly any topics which take more than 2 hours to complete. But without practicing it

is as good as nothing.

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension: Read. Read. Read. Reading is the
exercise for brain and just any other muscle you need workout to improve its
capability. Take up reading as your favorite pastime. Try to read extensive
opinionated / argumentative articles from good sources viz. British magazines,
English newspapers, etc. Not only should you read it fast, but also understand how
the writer flows the article and reaches a conclusion

In case you want to join any coaching Institute, I will suggest you to join KITABEE , It
has maximum students clearing CAT exam in terms of Percentage. Very qualified
faculty. FEES is also very LESS.For any aspirant, the following factors are of prime
importance when it comes to joining a coaching institute:

1.P ersonal attention - I think the most important factor is this. If personal
attention and mentoring is missing, don't join. When you are evaluating institutes, go
and check their classrooms for batch size. Ask for a demo session, if possible. Go and
take a demo class you will realize why i am suggesting KITABEE.

2.F aculty - In addition to point 1, look for faculties who have gone through the whole
process as they can understand you better and guide you better. Ask for faculty
details. See if you can talk to them. According to me “NeerajN eeraj sirsir” is the
best teacher just call him and ask any doubt if you have. 78388044917838804491 ,
9718375475, 9540897459.

3. C ontent/M aterial/mocks -At KITABEE content is getting frequently updated

to match the recent trends. As I said, not a differentiating factor. Mocks used to be a
differentiating factor, go and visit Kitabee site

In kitabee you will get ample of materials to practise. There will be regular classes and
after the completion of the class you will be given handouts which will comprise of
the same thing taught in class . You should manage your time so well that you should
practise every material. The study material are designed in such a way that it matches
with CAT level. Believe me if you just do the study material religiously you will surely
score more than 90 percentile.

Besides that you will be given sectional tests which will be little advanced . And then
comes the NEERAJ SIR’S AIMCAT.Clearing your doubts is another important thing
to follow every time

Kitabee focuses even on other exams like IIFT, SNAP, NMAT, XAT etc and regular
mocks and revision sessions help the students perform better in these exams as each
and every exam is a different ball game and needs a different strategy to excel.

As the number of students is less there is a personal bond between the students and
the mentors and this makes the faculty members very much approachable. Neraj Sir
and Pratik Sir are a constant source of motivation for the students and help them
work harder and harder. This pic was uploaded by Kitabee on Facebook …

KITABEE WILL HELP YOU IN ANALYZING

What are your areas of strength?

For Example, Quant is your area of strength. Jolly Good!! Which subjects do you
excel in Quant. Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry ?? Make sure you score cent percent
in them. What are your areas of weakness?? Probability. Make sure you learn the
basics to exploit the low hanging fruits.

What are your areas of weakness?

For example, VA (verbal ability). Which parts do you score in VA.

Synonyms/Antonyms, Paragraph reading, Sentence corrections. Awesome!!
Concentrate only on these areas and make sure this is enough to cross the line.

Enroll for a test package.

Give each test as if it the d-day. Determine time allocations as per your comfort. I
generally follow 30–30–30–10 rule. 30% of time per each section to cross the line and
final 10% of time to maximize my score.

Your preparation doesn't end here. It starts now. After each test, go through each
answer diligently. This helps you evaluate your strengths and weakness.

7/20/2017 How should I start preparing for the CAT exam 2017 to get into IIMs with 99 percentile? - Quora

For example, you fumbled with Data sets. Great!! Go back to basics. Read and solve
everything you can lay hand on for the next one week. Your aim for the next test
should be zero mistakes in Data sets.

On a normal basis, your All India percentile in these tests is more or less your
upcoming CAT score unless you somehow achieve super powers on the D-day and
perform exceedingly well.

Believe in yourSELF AND IN KITABEE ……!Aren’t you convinced yet. Well, that’s
how I made it during my CAT being an average student, from an average college.

And its a separate ball game altogether, if you are talking about GDPI.

All the best!! Work smart, bell the CAT!!

Start with Mock

Without seeing course pattern and other stuffs. Go blindly on Mock Test Series at the
beginning. Through this, you would an idea about the course architecture and the
complexity of CAT. You don’t need to worry about the level of questions and the time-
taken by your side. With this process, you would catch the things earlier and helps
you to identify your strengths and weakness.

Have a routine

https://www.quora.com/How-should-I-start-preparing-for-the-CAT-exam-2017-to-get-into-IIMs-with-99-percentile 11/21
7/20/2017 How should I start preparing for the CAT exam 2017 to get into IIMs with 99 percentile? - Quora

Here, you have to be very self-disciplined with yourself. Get a organised routine
which helps you to become more productive in a day. Start your day with exercise
yoga to meditate and then stick to your preparations. Take nap in afternoon and go to
outside in Evening. Again, start your preparations in night 3–4 hours. This routine
works for me but not for others. So, You have to set your routine according to your
priorities. But, try to give at least 4–6 hours everyday in CAT preparation.

Being Practical

Your foremost work is to solving the questions practically. I’ve seen, so many students
skip the questions, assumes that they know everything. Here, they makes BIG
mistake in overconfident. Try to do things in Practical way. Initially, you have to
spend lot of time on things but all paid off in long run. Period.

Analyze yourself (Most Important)

This is the most important aspect which helps you get top IIMs of the country. No
matter How many hours you give in study, Solve mock tests blindly and still not
getting results. Couldn’t identify where I am going wrong. Start Analyzing yourself
with every mock test series. You have to figure it out, which section is your stronger
side and which one is weaker.

Don’t be lazy to work on your weakness side. Give time to yourself and see how can
you turn out the things in your side.

Be Persistence….

had scored more than 99+ percentile in quantitative aptitude section three times in
CAT so I would like to guide you from my experience.

You need to follow the below mentioned points to score a good percentile in CAT

1.) You need to perform fairly well in all the three sections.

2.) You should have a clear and complete understanding of all the concepts for
quantitative aptitude section, recommended book- Arun Sharma.

3.)To do well in verbal section I suggest you to read daily for about 1 hr.

You should read novels/books/magazines of different genre which includes

fiction,science,sports etc etc

4.)To score fairly well in DI&LR section, follow Arun Sharma again as it has all the
concepts and techniques you need to perform well in this section .I will also suggest
you to solve the Puzzles book by Shakuntla Devi.

5.)Now comes the most important part that is mock tests.

Do give atleast 15–20 mocks before the exam. Mocks analysis is quite important to
work on your mistakes and improve your accuracy. You can take mock test series of
IMS, CL and for quant, DI & LR section - ADVAYS mock series

Well ,most of the people here have talked about how to study for cat to score 99%tile
but I don't think so you are looking for just that. Your main aim is to get into top IIMs
and for that scoring 99%tile is not sufficient.

I have many friends who have scored above 99%tile but couldn't convert even the new
IIMs .The only reason i could find was their profile was not convincing enough.

You need to work on your profile and this task is equally important as scoring 99%tile.
Then how to work on it is the big question. Well i have few suggestions for you.

1. Your purpose is very important. Every college is going to ask you why? Why
you want to do mba?

You need to prepare your answer right from the start. There has to be some
connection. Some series of event that drove you towards doing mba. Whatever stream
you choose, you need to study about it. Do research on people who have had the
carrier ahead with similar profile.

If you have no connection and just shifting from one domain to other or you are just
passing out from college then find some internship in that domain .

I have one for you. He is prof. Sameer Mathur from IIM Lucknow and he is
providing Marketing internship and Data Analytics internship to all those who
see carrier ahead in this profile. Please find the link below.

https://goo.gl/iA0zzR

Also do some courses on your specific domain from various good apps. Few listed
below.

Coursera/LinkedIn Learning/Udemy

2. Try to be part of some NGO's as most of the college look for your contribution
towars social cause and if you have it then it will be a good plus point for you.

7/20/2017 How should I start preparing for the CAT exam 2017 to get into IIMs with 99 percentile? - Quora

I have listed few good ones for you.

a) Teach For India

b) Make A Difference

c) Pratham

d) Barefoot College-India

e) CRY

3. You need to read newspapers and magazines on daily basis not just for your
vocab and RC prep but also to grow knowledge about what all is going on India and
around the world.

This will help you alot in your GROUP DISCUSSION/ ESSAY WRITING/PERSONAL
INTERVIEW. You will be having upper edge when it comes to real life examples and
facts and hence you will be able to speak and write about it.

4. Not everyone is good when it comes to public speaking.what to do then?

Find few clubs like Toastmasters/Debate in your near surroundings and be a part of
it and do attend all sessions. This will help you to overcome your fear in public
speaking and after few sessions of such clubs you will be very motivated and
confidant and eventually land up doing great in your post cat GD/PI sessions.

I will conclude by saying that studying for CAT exam is easy. All you need is regular
practice. But once you get a score then what? Everything that i have mentioned above
is for lifetime and not just one judgement day. One day cannot define your strength.
But if you are doing all that i have mentioned then this will shine in your profile for
lifetime and also make you stand out from others when you go for your GD/PI.

ALL THE BEST!

Let me tell you first, I have scored 95.3%ile in CAT’16 and I am not the one who has
already walked down the path of 99%ile. However as I plan to take CAT’17 and I need
to pave my way to cover the 4.5%ile distance. I can share my plans which I will follow
for CAT ‘17 and my learnings from this year’s experience.

Take all the mocks and take it on time. Don’t leave it for the end. By doing so, you get
a pack of mocks at the end of preparation which reduces your time to analyse the
mocks significantly. Another aspect is that, most of the institutes do not show you
your percentile if you are taking them out of schedule, so you loose the chance to see
where you stand. Remember, every mock is different from some aspect, so you need
to appear for all(all you are subscribed to) to make sure you identify your all strength
and weakness.

Ok, now you have identified your weakness, do not leave it just after identifying it.
The biggest mistake which I committed in CAT’16 was I knew from the
commencement of my preparation that I am not so good(read pathetic…I am being
euphemistic to myslef) in VARC section. But instead of working on it, I used to avoid.
I used to feel sleepy while reading RC passages. This is the difference b/w students
like me and students who score 99.5+. They never leave it, they work on it. No matter
how much you hate to read one RC passage, your goal is to crack CAT. You need to do
whatever it takes.

The above points should be in your mind till the last day of exam. Now let me
enlighten the preparation part:

Follow a strict routine. No matter what it takes(if you are not well or something like
this comes up then fine), you should not deviate from your routine. The routine you
just prepared might not be suitable for you. Change it after 7 days if you are not able to

follow. Make a routine which is suitable for you. Routine which is suitable for me,
might not be working great for you. So do not follow the toppers blindly for this.

Do practice a lot. It should not be like this- for past 7 days you are only doing QA and
VARC, DILR is totally eliminated. Remember scoring 100 percentile in 2 sections and
scoring 75 in last one will not fetch you calls from HOLY TRINITY(A, B, C).

Stay motivated, think hard work of 10months will land you in a place where you
always wanted to be….best of luck. Wish me Luck as well…:P

Akshay Sirsalewala, CAT 2016 - 99.24, CA, CFA, FRM

Answered Jan 24

First things first. 99 percentile is not good enough. I scored 99.24 (Profile -> 10th-88;
12th - 81; Bcom - 83%; CA,CFA,FRM) and got a call only from K. Aim higher. A 99
percentile would look pretty and can be a good show off but hardly be of any
substance. My advice -

1. Refer the right books. Arun Sharma is the best in business. Buy these ASAP.
Atleast for quants, he is legend.

2. Take mocks sincerely. Give 1 mock in 2 weeks initially and then proceed with
1 per week. The important part in a mock is not the score but what you take
back from it. For example, out of 50 odd para jumbles in mocks, I realised I
attempted only 2 correctly. So I realized there is no need for me to devote
time on that topic in the exam, due to my poor success rate. My entire focus
was on RC and grammar. I ended up scoring 98.6 pc in Verbal. Analysis of
mock is extremely important.

3. Maintain a formula sheet and go through it before every mock. Treat every
mock like an exam and try to give it under exam like conditions. For test
series, I would suggest Career Launcher and IMS.

Start early and kill it. Even if you do these 3 things sincerely, you are set! But just
remember, you have to get 99.5 to be in the game! Give it your best shot. You can do it.

Keshav Agarwal, Scored 99.0 percentile in CAT 2016

Answered Feb 6

Other answers have covered what you should do in terms of standard approach which
should be taken in order to score 99+ percentile in CAT pretty well. My approach
would be a little different from them as I believe that fretting over the exam will do
you more harm than good.

For QA section, you should choose any one book that you believe is sufficient for you.
I'd recommend the one by Arun Sharma if you need to study the basics and wish to
learn some neat tricks for solving questions on QA. On the other hand, if you're good
at QA and only need to brush up the basics, you can try quantitative aptitude for
competitive exams by RS Agarwal. Note that the book for general maths slightly
different as compared to the competitive one. And if someone tells you that RS
Agarwal is not good for CAT preparation, don't listen to them. The questions aren't as
tough as people portray them. Even I used RS Agarwal to prepare, Arun Sharma was
too much for me (I had the basics clear and I always tend to forget tricks, so it was not
that useful for me).

For LIDR section, you will find questions for practice in both the books
aforementioned. Although, I believe that you should also practice the questions for
this section not only through the books but also online, newspapers, kids' magazines

and everything you can get your hands on as logical reasoning is one thing that you
can't learn by a few questions. It must be developed thoroughly with concepts
embedded deeply in your mind.

For VA, around 15–20 novels along with regular newspaper reading should be enough.
But do not read books with excessively simple English or the ones that are available
precisely for catering to the youth and teens. Start with ones with medium level of
difficulty and depth, then move on to ones which take more effort to understand.
Keep going in this direction and you should be fine.

Lastly, never lose confidence. Even on the exam day, go in like you're the king of the
world and nothing can stop you from scoring. Nothing will do you more harm than
getting nervous in the exam hall as even the littlest of doubt can diminish your many
months’ effort by a huge margin.

I hope this helps you in achieving your goal. All the best! :)

First gather the information regarding CAT and structure of the exam.

Start doing the basic mathematics properly. Read newspapers , magazines , novels
etc. After getting basics set, take mocks for sectionals or full whichever suits. keep
learning as learning from mistakes will take you to your dream percentiles and
college too. Google up the resources available. Set a daily ‘things-to-do’ list and you
may excel.

Right now you have a lot of time to go through cat syllabus and hence you can prepare
for cat exam in a very decent way. so, here are some simple steps you need to follow. i
hope this can help you:

1. First of all take a good study material from any of the coaching institute like
TIME, IMS OR CL or if you can take a coaching then it will be the best option.

2. Otherwise take reference books like sarvesh kr verma for quant, nishit k
sinha or mc graw hill for DILR section and same publication for verbal as
well.

3. Start preparing for the basics or fundamental of each and every block which
you can easily complete within three to four months.

4. Then go for advanced or mixed problem type question that are already
present in those books or in study material and complete it within two
months.

5. After that much preparation start solving past cat papers and their question
and enroll for mock test series.

6. Give a mock in a week and analyse it thoroughly and don’t loose your
momentum if you are getting less percentile in mock series. As momentum
balancing is the foremost important part of cat exam because sometimes
your old hardship came as a miracle on that day.

GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR UPCOMING TIME
