Post-impressionism (1886-1905)

Definition
- a subjective approach of an artist since they tend to show emotions
rather than realism

Characteristics
- wildly varied
- emotional symbolism
- unnatural color
- painterly brushstroke (definition: has visible brushstroke due to less
control when applying paint)

Different Approaches
- Pointillism (introduced by Seurat and Signac in 1886, a painting
technique uses small and colorful dots to create a composition that focus
on flatness and formality.)
- Japonisme (inspired by Japanese art that Vincent van Gogh emulated.)
- Primitivism (it has an aesthetic of primitive art that was used by Paul
Gauguin and Henri Rousseau.)

Relationship with Impressionism


- Impressionism was based on recording nature in terms of effects of color
and light but post-impressionism exceed its limitation. To have freedom
to express the artist feelings.
