EXPERIMENT # 01

Determine the dry to wet ratio of concrete

Aim
The aim of this experiment is to determine dry to wet ratio of concrete.
Test standard

Apparatus/Materials
 Cylindrical mould
 Tapping rod
 Shovel
 Cement, sand and aggregate(1:2:4)
 Water
 Vibrating table
 Measuring scale
 Measuring cylinder
Related theory
Quantity estimation of materials is essentially required in any construction works and
quantity of materials depend on the mix proportions of the concrete.
Procedure
 Clean the platform which is to be used for mixing concrete.
 Considering 1:2:4 proportions of constituents, prepare the concrete mix.
 Take 80% of 300mm water, considering 0.8 water to cement ratio.
 To add water make a depression in the middle of the mix and pour water gradually
into ½ to ¾ of total quantity and mix it with shovel.
 Take a cylindrical container of 6 inches diameter and fill it with 1/3 of volume of
concrete mix and give 25 uniform strokes.
 Repeat previous step twice.
 Do further compaction of concrete mix using vibrating table and measure the wet
volume of the specimen.
 After 24 hours de-mould the specimen.

Observations & Calculations

 Calculations for temperature correction coefficient (α)

Total height of cylinder: 1 feet

Diameter of the cylinder: 6 inches

Volume of the wet concrete = Ԓ r2

5
Wet volume of concrete = 3.14 x (3)2 x 7.6 = 214.766 inches3

Dry volume of concrete= 128.14 inches3

Dry to wet ratio: 1.67
