 The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Social Media are currently being used regularly by millions of people. The

Internet is more than just a means of seeking information. People discovered that the

Internet could be used to connect with other people, whether for business or commercial

purpose, make new friends, reawaken old friends and long lost relatives. It is to

encourage new ways to communicate and share information. Many students always log in

to their account on Facebook, Twitter, Ins-tag-ram, You-tube, Wattpad, and etc. as a part

of their everyday routine. Could you imagine the number of all the students logging in to

these social media, everyday? That would be millions of students logging.

According to Whitehouse (2011),” there are many negative effects of SNS, like;

students may lose concentration in school. For instance, students always feel tired in

class. As a result, they do not understand what their teacher taught them. Thus, students

could fail in their examination”. Whenever they go home, some students go directly to

computers to be updated and be consumed by SNS, forgetting their assignments. They

even go all night long just to play a game in SNS or chat with friends. This kind of action

will result to tardiness in school and might affect their focus in the classes that leads to

the dropping of their academic and physical performance. Many students find it difficult

to go about their normal life without making use of social media. It has been observed

that student does not listen in class, they are busy chatting and reading stories online.
They waste their time chatting with their friends instead of reading and practicing what

they have learned in school.

Too much use of education technology tools for accessing social media by

students is harmful and there must be a limit. Students should pursue an excellent

academic performance and gain adequate knowledge that will help them in the future.

The study is to determine the Effect of Social media on Academic Performance of

Senior High School Students.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find the Effect of Social Media On Academic Performance

of Senior High School Students.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondent in terms of:

a. Age

b. Sex

c. Strand

2. What is social media are most visited by the students?

3. To know if Social Media affect the academic performance of the students?

Objective of the Study

Generally the study aims to find the Effect of Social Media On Academic

Performance of Senior High School Students Identify the profile of the respondent in

terms of:

a. Age

b. Sex

c. Strand

1. To know the most social media visited by the students.

2. To know how it affect the academic performance of senior high school student by

using social media.
