Learning Activities or Instructional Strategies
Do Now will enhance individual reading skills and growth before continuation of reading "The Crucible." Readtheory tracks student reading level based on their answers to multiple
choice questions and short-answer responses on the reading quizzes they receive after reading a short article or story, as well as tracking student lexile level. The Do Now requires
that students complete a minimum of three quizzes, because once students complete three quizzes, they should still continue to go on while others are working to constantly
increase their reading level and lexile level. Students will then continue reading Arthur Miller's, "The Crucible" in class. Students will their desks in a large circle and assign roles to
themselves to read the characters' dialogue throughout the play. Students will read text aloud and add to their guided notes for Act I while reading. Discussion points will be made
throughout the reading to ensure reading comprehension, identification of characterization traits, plot development, and connections to Puritanism, the Salem Witch Hunts, and
McCarthyism. Class will begin with a brief informational video to teach students the truths behind the Salem Witch Trial, emphasizing that everyone accused was not necessarily
executed.
