1. A heat exchanger consists of 15 m


of copper tubing with an internal diameter
of 15 mm. There are 14 return elbows in
the system with a loss coefficient of 2.2 for
each elbow shown in Fig.P1. The pump in
the system has a pump curve given by

Where hp0 is head provided by the pump at zero discharge and Qmax is 10–3 m3/s. Water at 40°C flows
through the system. Find the system operating point for values of 0 ≤ ℎ ≤ 20 [m]. Plot the results.

2. What is the flow rate of water at 20C through a 24 in diameter commercial steel (schedule 40)
piping system shown in Fig.P2a? The pump has the characteristics shown in Fig.P2b. What is the
power required?
