    What is Soil?
    Directions: Study samples of soil collected from different areas of your state. Use hand
    lenses and vials to examine what is found in soil.

    Pour a sample of soil onto a black and a sample onto white construction paper. Using a hand
    lens, examine the soil to see the different components. Draw and write your observations.

    Fill clear vials with soil and water. Shake. Wait a little while for
    the matter to separate. Do you see layers? Different colors?
    Particle sizes? Record your observations.
