DEBATE’S MOTION/ PROPOSITION

Motion/ Proposition- topic or subject matter of the debate

THC- This House celebrates … THR- This House regrets …
THW- This House would … THBT- This House believes that …
1. Open Motion- vague/highly open for different interpretation/ unfair and
rarely given out in debate. Example: THC that carrots are better
potatoes.
2. Semi-Closed/Semi- Open Motion- relatively more clear and more
specific. Example: THW improve transportation system. THBT the act of
ignoring “crying for help” should be criminally liable.
3. Closed Motion- Very clear and specific and there’s no room for doubt.
Example: THW allow developed nations to use the effectiveness of
population control mechanism of a developing country as a basis for
giving foreign aid.
 DEFINITION OF TERMS IN DEBATE
1. Government- also called PROPOSITION/ AFFIRMATIVE
2. Opposition- also called NEGATIVE
3. Adjudicator- arbitrator or judge in a debate match
4. Argument/ Constructive Speech- opinion, view or stance that is
reinforced by evidence
5. Rebuttal- a form of polite contradiction against a particular argument
6. Reply/ Bias Adjudication- a form of bias judging delivered by one
representative from either the government or opposition side in four-
minute speech
7. Cross-Examination/ Interpellation/ Point of Information- questions or
validates the argument of the other group.
